henning,
My job is a little complicated. In china, we have two kind of teachers, one is in charge of teaching and the other is in charge of supervising! I am in charge of supervising freshman and junior in my college.我负责大一和大三的学生哦,主要是女生,男生比较少,淘气的也就个别的一些学生! How's your teacher's day? did you receive some special gifts? I did!At the moment, I felt that I was the most happy teacher in the world!

September 14, 2008, 04:11 AMhenning,
Actually, I wouldn't take gifts from students anyway. Taking gifts does not only have an ominous aftertaste here, it would border on the illegal
chinese people like 送礼 .逢年过节,亲朋好友间都会互相送礼,礼尚往来嘛!However, there are some other people that have other intentions when they want to send some gifts to some people! 我不赞同这种方式的送礼!
On teachers' day , it is different! Students show their love , respect and gratitude to their teachers by gifts, cards ,flowers and warm text messages.

September 14, 2008, 04:25 AMBecause it was a very special moment in my life, I was totally moved by my studnets. So I wrote a blog on teacher's day!(all in chinese)
I almost cried when one boy sang me a song and others applaused!

September 13, 2008, 05:22 PMcassie,
太可惜. We don't have a "teachers' day" over here. And moreover University lecturers are not considered teachers (although of course 实际上 that is exactly what they do).
Actually, I wouldn't take gifts from students anyway. Taking gifts does not only have an ominous aftertaste here, it would border on the illegal.
This is both a cultural and a legal thing. I once supervised a Chinese student's (excellent) master thesis and afterwards she insisted on handing me a small box of chocolates which I of course refused to accept. Almost turned into a fight.
