Hi, can someone explain to me when to use 這麼(zhe4 me5) and 那麼(na4 me5)? I really have a hard time using both "so" 's.

However, I only know how to use both of its Cantonese counterpart, which is "咁";as in , 你點解咁呆? (你怎麼這麼/那麼呆?).

Also, please give examples like:

為什麼你那麼兇?

Thanks in advance!!!

Hi hitokiri,

It's my understanding that "这么" is basically used when talking about something happened just in front of you, and "那么" is for something a bit "far away". So, I would say "你怎么这么笨!" when my chubby dog did a stupid thing before me. On the other hand, "你怎么那么笨" would be used when taking about her stupid behavior done in the past or at other places.

你怎么这么笨呢?

他怎么那么傻呢?

举个例子。呵呵~

同意Changye的观点。

Hi hitokiri,

I just hope so, hehe. I guess it also depends on how you feel about something, in other words, it depends on “mental distance”. For instance, you might say "亲爱的,你怎么这么可爱" to yourself, vividly visualizing your pretty girlfriend, but you can also say "你怎么那么可爱" when thinking about her.

Hi changye. Haha, I usually tell her, "지혜! 너를 너무 예뻐요!" Mental distance? Gee, I never usually thought about "這麼/那麼" that way, but that helped me. 謝謝!

Please try to say this phrase to your Korean (?) girlfriend. 너 왜 이렇게 예쁘니? (你怎么这么漂亮), haha.

Changye, so it all depend on when/where the thing that one person is talking about?

多謝多謝!

Hi, I am Korean-American, so the Korean phrases drew me in. I am looking at the sentences above, and I think they are not quite correct.

I think 지혜! 너 너무 예뻐요 should be 지혜! 너 너무 예뻐요

Also, 그대녀는 한국인 입니다 should be 그대녀는 한국인 입니다

But then, I have long since stopped thinking in Korean, so I could be wrong.

Nice explanations.  It makes sense now that you put it so simply.

Just like 这 "this" is for something close to you, 这么 is for something close.

And just like 那 "that" is for something at a distance, so too is 那么.

Interesting.

Hi calkins,

The problem is that it doesn't seem to be that simple in actual conversations, haha. I guess that "mental distance" is critical for using them properly.
