That is awesome!!!!  Ryan is a very cute kid...I think he'll have a great sense of humor.  And he'll probably be fluent before any of us here!

Depends on what you want get a head start with, you can use 开始。

If you are trying to say, you want to get a head start in learning Mandarin, it goes like this:

谢谢你的短片,我想我也要开始学习中文了!

开始 just means start. I would translate what you wrote as " I think I should have started studying Chinese". I don't see the meaning of head start in there, either explicit or implied. However, Chinese does not seem to have an exact word for headstart. Also, since your sentence includes the words 想, 要,and 了 maybe you are using some grammatical construction that I am not aware of. Since babardwan wrote that in 2009 maybe he has figured it out by now. ;-) Or maybe we can get a native speaker to weigh in.

哈哈, thanks podster, sadly after all this time I can't come up with a definitive answer. The closest I can come at it is something like "良好的开端" or "领先的开端",which I prefer to 领先 on its own,抢先,先起动,占先,

There is also 先声夺人 which seems even less satisfactory

thanks janelle. I agree with podster. I was referring to this meaning:

specifically, a head start "granted mercifully by an opponent" hehe
