July 31, 2007, 02:48 PMYes indeed, babliku. From chapter 56 of the 道德经 Dào Dé Jīng attributed to 老子。It does appear in modern Chinese as it has been translated into many languages, Chinese included. Here's one in English and one in Chinese: Original 知者不言, 言者不知。 English (by James Legge) He who knows (the Tao) does not (care to) speak (about it); he who is (ever ready to) speak about it does not know it. Chinese (by 李晓渝 Lǐ Xiǎoyú) 智者知道大道的精妙, 勤而行之, 不敢多言; 而不知者, 却成天喋喋不休, 自以为了解了一切。 Zhìzhě zhīdao dàdào de jīngmiào, qín ér xíng zhī, bù gǎn duōyán; ér bùzhī zhě, què chéngtiān diédiébùxiū, zì yǐwéi liǎojiě le yīqiè.

August 01, 2007, 08:11 PMbabliku , I only mentioned 孔乙己 Kǒng Yǐjǐ because he hung out in bars at muttered "之乎者也zhī-hu-zhě-yě" a lot. Sort of a failed scholar type and the butt of the locals' humor. I wasn't casting aspersions in your direction, though. "之乎者也" just reminded me of Lu Xun's (鲁迅 Lǔ Xùn) story, one of my favorites of one of my favorite Chinese writers.

July 31, 2007, 03:32 PMhmm laodai, I'm not sure if I understood what you took what I said to be (haha compleks sentences), but when I said "never in modern conversational Chinese" I was referring to the original quotes. It's quite funny how they wrote so completely differently in those days, in the so-called "之乎者也" style. It's like the thou art thyeth of China. haha
