As a newbie I completed the first lesson then went through the unit test.  In the "Dialogue" portion, where you listen to a sound bite then are asked to type in what you hear, I could not get any item correct.  I have tried several times.  I know I am typing in the correct english translation and/or the correct chinese translation but my answers are always marked as incorrect.  Just what is supposed to be typed in during this portion of the test?

you should write either the chinese characters or the pinyin with tone marks.

Stupid question #2!  How do I set my computer to type chinese characters and/or pinyin with tone marks?

For characters, initiate a program such as Google pinyin (you input pinyin and it supplies the characters.) The pinyin tone marks is a ChinesePod function - I think you activate it in Resources.

deeply depends on the operating system. Assuming windows xxx, you have the (system options/control panel) -> keyboard input methods. (naming may vary, just browse a bit)

Again depending on your windows version, you either need your install CD or not when you try to add "support for asian language" or "add chinese input".

Google pinyin is a comforting, forgiving and pleasant method for me to enter text, the Microsoft standard IME (Input Method Editor) is kind of the opposite, but works.
