32 Transcripts

Well, one of my students came through with 32 Intermediate transcripts. At my request (to save time), he didn't bother with Pinyin, or any of the English spoken by John or Jenny. So I have left the file in Word form so people can edit it as they wish.

Download here.

Thanks to Richy for the time spent on those.

I had to restrain myself from laughing when another student came up to me and apologised for not doing any transcripts because "My little brother destroyed your CD". I have never actually heard someone try to use this excuse before. At least his dog didn't eat it.

Wow Bob. That's impressive!
Do you by any chance have a list of which 32 lessons these are?

Astonishing!

A list of the lessons covered might be a good idea though Bob, they don't seem to be in any particular order. I think at least one of them I have previously covered myself.

Well, as I said, I've left in as a Word document for people to edit, so feel free to create your own lesson list. The only editing I've had time to do is to put all the transcripts into one document, and to change the font of the characters. (I'd be interested to know what font you are seeing, because it is unlikely you have mine installed). I will be going through the lessons one at a time as I get the time, adding Pinyin and a Vocab list - but don't let me stop anyone who wants to do that first!

I've been looking through the first transcription "A Business Dinner with a Supplier".

It seems my transcriber made some errors. I've corrected some myself, but could someone help me out with the following:

1. (0:50) 招待其实就是请客的意思。(sounds like 2 syllables, not 4)

2. (0:59) 当然,吃喝招待在中国是非常重要的,生意,对吧? (Sounds to me like the comma should be one character later, and is 喝 right?)

3. (3:09) 然后你非常的尊重他,所以他的名字是很厉害的,大名。(sounds to me more like suǒyǐ shuō nǐ)

4. (3:29) 但是咱们中国人...  (sounds like dāng to me)

5. (3:32) 对呀,说久仰大名。好那接下来呢,别人就可能(?)回答你,...  (the jiù sounds more like ju jiang / there seems to be another syllable where the ? is)

6. (6:09) 对。就是说你要做很多...  (Is it correct?)

7. (7:22) 就是说你(?)掌握的东西不够你使用。(There seems to be another syllable where the question mark is)

8. (8:25) 对呀,你说过以后你肯定就不记得了,因为都醉了嘛。(I'm not hearing that. Not sure what it is though.)

9. (8:47) 我们赶快来听听他们这精彩的对话。(Again, I'm not hearing that.)

10. (10:31) John老实说啊,今天的这个课,是Peter这一系列里我是最喜欢的,因为比较有趣,是吧? (Is it correct?)

11. (10:46) 这样大家(?)觉得私人关系比较好。(I'm hearing another syllable)

BTW, I'm wondering what my transcriber was thinking when he wrote Chinesepot.com

I'm finding the time code showing when I play back this dialogue to be a bit screwy, making it hard to find the points you've brought up.
The first four questions I've gone over though:

1) Jenny says this really quickly, she is saying 其实就是.

2) You're right, it should be 那当然吃,(not 喝)招待在中国是……

3) Right again. That should be 然后你非常的尊重他,所以说你(的)名字是很厉害的,大名。

4) This is 但是咱们中国人……

Just a suggestion Bob--it would be helpful if you posted the link to the lesson with the questions. Sorry if this sounds like grumbling, but it's just that much more trouble, to go search and find the lesson being talked about.

And can you tell us which 32 lessons have been covered here? It's not that I want a list really. And why don't I just go and look through to find out? Well I started to (and I have a feeling that's why Phil's list only goes down to the first 10), but scrolling through such a big document to find all the titles was terribly straining on the eyes, I abandoned that attempt pretty quickly.

I'm impressed that you dragged them away from computer games and into a socially worthwhile pursuit.  :-)  And 'good work' to Ricky.

I've just finished my first semester teaching Chinese students in China.  In two courses (and four classes) there was only one 'late' assignment (illness was the reason). Nothing along the lines of the dog ate my homework.  I was puzzled by this absolute compliance.

Lots of excuses for missing class - because an excuse constitutes 'leave' and cannot be used against them in their final mark.  Mostly the excuses were 'I have a family matter', ganmao and laduzi.  A couple of students took leave to look after sick/dying relatives.

Thanks for providing the titles Bob. So they're in alphabetical order. I'll try when I have the time to go look through the rest of your questions (like I said though, I'm having a bit of difficulty with the time code).

Yes, they are in alphabetical order, but that is only because I combined Ricky's separate Word files in that order - naturally the file names appeared in alphabetical order on the CD he gave me. I gave him a CD with about 100 podcasts - apparently he chose the shortest ones to do first, why is why Ken appears in many of these lessons.

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back on A Business Dinner With a Supplier. The audio player on this lesson is in bad shape--I suppose I should have used some other audio player (therefore, the time codes didn't mean very much to help me find these points).

5) (3:32)
对呀,说久仰大名。好那接下来呢,别人就可能(?)回答你,... (the jiù sounds more like ju jiang / there seems to be another syllable where the ? is)
对呀,说‘久仰大名'。好,那接下来呢,别人就可能回答你......

6) (6:09)
对。就是说你要做很多... (Is it correct?)
sorry I couldn't find this point, as the time code doesn't help me and there wasn't much else by way of a marker in the context.

7) (7:22)
就是说你(?)掌握的东西不够你使用。(There seems to be another syllable where the question mark is)

8) (8:25)

9) (8:47)

Sounds more like dan to me than duan, but I can't think what it could be, other than 段.

10) (10:31)
John老实说啊,今天的这个课,是Peter这一系列里我是最喜欢的,因为比较有趣,是吧? (Is it correct?)

这样大家觉得私人关系比较好。

And the other thing, I haven't referred to the document either.
Hope this helps though.

Thanks for that. I probably won't have time to look at it this week though.

The times I have are from Windows Media Player.

It seems the file somehow got corrupted.

Try this new link for the 32 transcripts.

CPOD:  I wanted to edit the link in my original post. But when I went to my list of posts, only one page was shown. Why aren't we able to edit ALL of our posts?
