Cpod Vacations for Chinese New Year?
pretzellogic
February 01, 2010, 08:25 AM posted in General DiscussionJust curious if any/all Cpod staff are taking well-earned time off for the upcoming Spring Festival? It might be helpful to give users a heads-up that some Cpod staff members may not be around as expected during what is one of the biggest Chinese holidays of the year. Thanks.

Thanks ousijia. I'll try and get my questions in before the start. February 14th, right?
ousijia
Yes that's right. Don't worry if you can't fit in all your questions before then though, as there will be some members of staff still active in the community who can help you out!

Could you clarify the period of 'CNY holidays' (never seen it expressed like that before)? Is it Sunday 14 February - Sat 20 February inclusive (7 days)? Will lessons be published as usual in this period?

We've been working hard in advance to make sure the lessons come out on schedule! Despite holidays, CPod always sticks to its 5-lesson/wk schedule.
Basically the CNY "Chinese New Year" holiday is the government-mandated week off from 13 Feb. to 19 Feb. In China everyone works through the weekend following the holiday to compensate for the "extra" time (2 days) added to the 5-day week off. Confusing, I know!

No, all perfectly logical! :-)
So this time the Thursday and Friday (18 & 19) are added to get the full seven days, and you work Saturday and Sunday (20 and 21) to make up for the Thursday and Friday, right?
What is bemusing is that people here actually think they are getting seven days holiday, when in reality many people (those that don't usually work Saturday and Sunday) are getting just three. But I shouldn't get started; I get the whole period as a paid holiday.

February 02, 2010, 11:13 AMJust wondering, should we expect this site (and others) to slow to a crawl during that week, as it did for the last holiday?
catherinem
Not really sure I understand what you mean - are you talking about site activity or page load times/download times?

During the 60-year celebrations last year, half the time the site could not be accessed, and the rest of the time the site was unbearably slow - it often took me a couple of minutes or more to access a new page. There was a lot of talk about it on these forums at the time. I didn't really understand the reason for it, but people were saying it had something to do with those celebrations.

February 02, 2010, 01:57 AM@pretzellogic,
All the Chinese teachers will be away for the CNY holidays, however there will be a few members of other cpod staff in the office and on the community.
