Hi everybody,

I will be meeting my sister in law for the first time tonight. She is Chinese.

I sure want to learn Chinese but it would be very nice if someone could help me with a few sentences for tonight ;-)

I wanted to say the following:

Hi, my name is Livia. Pleased to meet you! Hope you like Germany.

I already found the words for the first part, but the part "pleased to meet you" causes me troubles :-(

Any help is highly appreciated :-)

Pleased to meet you could be said as 我很高兴认识你 (Wǒ hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ).

True about the literal translation, but I've never been greeted that way. I think 'Huanying' would be more easily recognized as well.

Thanks a lot for your help johnb :-) So rènshi stands for meeting, right? In the lessons, I found jiànmiàn for "to meet". I am curious - what is the difference between these two?

Hi my name is Liva- ni hao, wo jiao4 Liva. For hope you like Germany, I think 'huanying2 deguo2 lai2' (welcome to Germany) might work well.

AzerDocMom and Ron's comments both actually translate to mean "Welcome you to Germany". If you wanted to say (literally) "I hope you like Germany", you'd want to say 我希望你喜欢德国. wo3 xi1wang4 ni3 xi3huan1 de2guo2

I don't wanna be a wet blanket, but I suggest you concentrate on the pronunciation. Won't be good if she doesn't know what you're saying right? I was watching an episode of House where he said a sentence of what was supposed to be Chinese. I couldn't understand a word of it. rènshi means to acquaint with (someone). So: wǒ rènshi tā means I know him (I've acquainted myself with him). jiànmiàn is to meet, as you've learnt.

Liva, RoninDC It sounds more natural to me to say, "huan1ying2 ning2 lai2 de2guo2" Perhaps the acad team can clarify.
