October 09, 2007, 10:50 AMSpeaking Chinese within 60 days? Aren't secret agents those guys who are responsible for collecting information on other countries before a possible war? I do not want to become political here, but maybe they should learn languages the long and hard way, like we all do here. The world might be a more peaceful place.

October 09, 2007, 11:23 AMI totally agree. However, we all know that most westerners these days have the attention span of a two-year old. No one wants to buy a product that will guarantee fluency within five years. They want fluency yesterday. Those "fluent in 60 day" promises, while very unrealistic, are making someone a lot of money.

October 09, 2007, 12:28 PMIt looks as if they're just reselling the FSI stuff. caveat emptor, I guess.

October 09, 2007, 12:59 PMAh, looks like you're right. And for those who don't know, the FSI material is available online for free since it was produced using tax-payer's dollars. You can find it all here: http://fsi-language-courses.com/Chinese.aspx

October 09, 2007, 01:12 PMAlso found this interesting link alongside the above FSI link: http://www.nvtc.gov/lotw/months/november/learningExpectations.html This looks at the approximate hours necessary for native English-speaking learners to reach a level of proficiency in a number of different languages.

October 09, 2007, 01:34 PMthe FSI stuff is free and probably served its purpose but it's very dated, recordings are poor and overall quality debatable, I wouldn't spend any time on it
