Dear All (Twitter users, in particular!),

I've been asked to judge a competition on Twitter by the people at Ctrip (http://english.ctrip.com/), a website that many folks here in China use to book their hotels and flights.

They are offering the chance to win a stay at the 5* Shanghai Shangri-La and all you need to do is reply to @ctripenglish on Twitter with your answer to the following question: "Why do you deserve a free room night @ the SH Shangri-La?"

Get your entry in by Friday because I'll be judging the contest and announcing the winner right here on Monday. And be sure to inject as much comedy into your 140-character tweet as possible because amusing replies will be favoured!

For details on the rules, take a look at this page: http://pages.english.ctrip.com/promo/twitter/twitter.html

I look forward to reading your entries on Twitter.

Reminder that Ken will pick the winner of the stay at the Shanghai Shangri-la tomorrow (Friday).

I noticed that a few poddies have entered already, including bababardwan's amusing, though quite disturbing, tweet:

"@ctripenglish SH Shangri-La is the only place that looks like it will let me bring my girlfriend Rila [http://tinyurl.com/c2kck7 ]"

If you think you can do better, send the guys at @ctripenglish your own reply.

(Bababardwan, I hope you don't mind me using your entry as an example but it did make me smile!).

suxiaoya,

Thanks for your nice comments.Even though we didn't win the prize,we have won more than that by your encouragement, under which Rila has really bloomed:

Go Rila !

@bababardwan I apologise, it was wrong of me and highly insensitive. I didn't consider the problems you and your charming girfriend may face. Her tutu is so pretty; I hope the sewers of Shanghai don't muddy it. Nay, I hope Ken chooses your entry so there's no need to resort to the sewers at all.

hehe,

Apology accepted with much warmth.Hey,you have the honour of being the first to accept us;our first friend.I'm glad you noticed the tutu.If you look closer you will start to notice other things, like the grace of pose, the depth in the eyes, and how well groomed [I defy you to spot a single flea;despite the appaling squalid conditions we've had to take abode in,we still have our pride you know.No one can take that away].No matter where we end up,you must make sure to come visit. :)

yes but it's her attire that disturbs--topless and knickerless (knickersless?) yet the tiny skirt encouraging voyeurism.  wouldn't let a girlfriend of mine dress like that, not even in the privacy of home.

suxiaoya,

Sure,I don't mind you using my entry at all,but I am a little dismayed that even someone so lovely as yourself would comment:

"though quite disturbing"

...but am somewhat resigned to having to accept this prejudice as we face it wherever we go.Like others you probably see a bmi issue and a slight case of hirsuitism. Why can't others see the inner beauty that I do? So once again,we'll probably have nowhere to stay and will have to resort to finding a spot under a bridge near the sewer.Such is life.

bababardwan, deepest apologies for my literal and figurative myopia. and that is yes a touchy subject as you say, i should know as i have the very same condition as your (lucky girl) rila except for my 脸 which has by some perverse whim of genetics been spared. social pressures have been so bad that i took care of the legs, so as long as i stay covered from neck to knees i look ... regular. but this has left me destitute. so i congratulate you on your special relationship with rila, whom now that i see past all the darkness is obviously a charming and vibrant personality. you two, heroes of us the marginalized and ignored, can dream at least a little while more of a stay at the Shangri-La ... hope you win

We'd like to congratulate Twitter user, CLU883R, on his winning entry to the Ctrip/ChinesePod competition.

Ken apparently favours anything to do with Chuck Norris, so the winning entry was not difficult for him to pick:

CLU883R: @CtripEnglish because we will have extra money to set up the first indoor bouncing castle with a view on the bund and inflatable Chuck Norris

Nice one, CLU883R. We hope you enjoy your stay at the Shangri-la!

Other entries of note include:

casj969: @ctripenglish: because i don't know what clean linens look like..

Ray_Jing: @ctripenglish If my aching bicycle legs could talk, they would say "take me to Shang-Hai-La"

- And, of course, Bababardwan's fantastic tweets (see above thread)!!

zhenlijiang,

ahem, would you believe me if I told you she actually is wearing those garments? Look a little closer and you may just be able to espy them.Once again I'm feeling a little touchy that you are bringing attention to her aforementioned slight hirsuitism problem which I can see you too are just another one who is having difficulty seeing beyond.
