Breakdown:

拆...chai1...tear down/tear apart/tear open

除....chu2....to get rid of/to remove

The larger than life size of the statue reminds me a little of the proliferation of all the "Big" attractions around Australia,like one of my favourites,the "Big Banana" at Coffs Harbour:

大香蕉

mdbg gives 香蕉 as the most common way to say banana but I prefer the less common 芭,however I would like to see it in a longer transliterated form which I would have as :

芭拿拿

..banana,hold it,hold it...the darn thing can be mighty slippery.

@barbs

what about 拆拿 .. (China)

拆 is a word rich in meaning - I remember some classic photos of buildings in the vicinity of the Three Gorges dam project bearing a single character.  Then I realised that the character is everywhere.  It is code for 'A new shopping mall is opening here soon'.

BTW.  We are thinking of giving the Big Banana to France - a French architect wants to build a replica of the Sydney Opera House in the outer suburbs of Paris to raise the tone of the locality.  But surely the banana would make people happier?

bodawei,

How about 茶拿 ?...hold onto your Chai tea.

I don't know that mate about giving the Big Banana to France.I don't think we have a big frog to offer,but I wonder if they'd come at the Big Cane Toad we have up North Queensland ?
