Just joshing. The closest I got to tennis was Space Invaders, back in the Stone Age.

........... wait, it wasn't Space Invaders, it was something else, sort of pingpong. Same era.

Not sure exactly where the problem lies, so don't know the answer. Have you watched any Rugby ? There's not as much consistent bad play and the ref is God - you very seldom see a player arguing with the ref, and they usually take their talking-to humbly.

Cricket, okay; but tennis ? You have my deepest commiserations, and I hope you have a speedy recovery.

It's a difficult and often thankless job, but let's face it, he was far too lenient on the Dutch. Yeah, some allowance has to be made for a World Cup final, but he went too far. It's not hard to break a limb or even your neck if you fall awkwardly from a vicious tackle - and he just let it continue. If the Dutch had happened to score the winning goal in the last 5 minutes of the game instead of the Spanish, then there would have been an huge outcry about the quality of the refereeing.

I heard that there were qualms about the choice of ref in the spanish media before the game. Do you know what was said ?

That's no accident - players know that if a guy's head is anywhere near the ball and they kick for it at head height, then that's a serious mistake and not in the spirit of the game. There were plenty of bad fouls by the Dutch in the first half - they only stopped it in the 2nd half cos half their team had been shown the yellow card, and further violations would certainly warrant sending-offs.

I started out rooting for the Dutch, but when I saw what their game-plan was - the big guys bullying and intimidating the more skillful little guys - I soon switched allegiance.

The ref was English. Wonder what the tabloids will say about him today.

There's always gonna be a bit of pushing and pulling, but the Dutch were more interested in inflicting Greivous Bodily Harm than playing good football. Did you not notice the yellow-carded kung fu death-kick ? What do you have to do to get sent off by this ref ? Use brass knuckles ? Use a submachine gun ? The Dutch should have been down to 8 men by the end of the first half; they were a disgrace.

Well, I've heard it said many times by wise old football supporters that that the ref is a Fairy, or Fred Astaire, and half the people can't be wrong all of the time.

heh heh

The ref should now go get his pension, a new pair of spectacles, a bucketful of cognitive-enhancing drugs, and beam back up to the Starship Enterprise.

That's just your opinion; millions would disagree. Soccer is no more or less extraordinary than any other sport. I don't like tennis or golf, but I would never take a dig at these extraordinarily tedious games or their moronic followers.

See what you mean now .... it's the problem about now not being used to something you used to be used to. Doh.

That is the question.
