January 26, 2010 at 6:39 PMI was a lefty originally, but was made to write as a right-hander at school. I don't think that this was because of prejudice against lefties, but because we wrote with ink, and a lefty finds it more difficult to write without smudging ink (maybe). Now I am right-handed at everything, except the way I hold a rifle and hold a bow to fire an arrow. Strange. Must be because they never taught me to 'correct' the way I played with toys.

January 24, 2010 at 8:28 PMI have also read somewhere of a slight correlation between left-handedness and schizophrenia; something to do with right-hemisphere dominance.

January 6, 2010 at 8:54 PMI just finished listening to a recent Intermediate lesson "Having your nails done". 涂(tu2) is used for applying cosmetic hand-cream, so I'd guess that it's also used for topical preparations such as steroid creams and moisturisers.
I wonder how you say 'apply sparingly' in Chinese ?Posted on: Going to the Pharmacy
January 4, 2010 at 9:45 PMYeah, stevemisch, there's evidence that fever is the body's way of creating a hostile environment for invasive organisms which thrive within a limited temperature range. When people ask me for paracetamol, I often tell them to chuck it in the bin. As for antibiotics being freely and routinely available for coughs and colds without medical input - what a great way to foster resistance !

December 7, 2009 at 12:53 PMTo think that this lesson contains 'adult' material is absurd; but having said that, there was no point in trying to embarrass Connie in public - that was childish and reflects on Lili's insensitivity. At least, that's how it came across to me. I felt awkward for Connie.

November 2, 2009 at 7:50 PMJenny: Thanks ! Another thing I've noticed is the clever way that some words appear in the chat and explanations, and are introduced as vocabulary items in subsequent lessons ( and viceversa ). The repetition of grammatical structures also seems well-planned .... 'fraid I'm the sort who needs lots of repetition.
Cheers !

November 1, 2009 at 1:55 PMWe didn't have Trick or Treat, we had Mischief Night. Usually it was bangers up the drainpipe, or tying the outside door shut with a washing-line .... that sort of stuff. The worst thing that happened was when the French teacher's beautiful wrought-iron garden gate was thrown in the river. They never did find out who did it.

谢谢你的热情的鼓励!我现在对CPod的中级课很高兴。我希望以后开始学比较难课的时候,我就不会太心动了,哈哈。我说得不好,请多包涵。

Congratulations CPod !! Last year I started working through the old Intermediate lessons from the very beginning, and was disappointed to discover that they were set too far above the Elementary level for me - mainly with regard to the untranslated chat and explanations. I recently had a go at some recent Intermediate, and discovered to my delight that they are now pitched at the right level - if anything, they are a bit easy; but I'm not complaining ! I'm now working on each of the lessons as they appear, and also working backwards through the lessons, which is probably a good preparation for those difficult first lessons. Then on to Upper Intermediate where the switch will (hopefully) be less intimidating. Great work ! Just what I need !
