May 17, 2012 at 9:54 AMSorry - another quick question. In the very last expansion sentence, would it make sense to say "堵车的话那就没底了" on its own, without the first half of the sentence (不堵车的话半个小时就能到，堵车的话那就没底了)? Or does the 没底 only make sense in reference to the first part?

哪来的工作证明
...This seems a really useful phrase but it's not I've come across much (or certainly ever used myself). Can I use it with any noun phrase (我哪来的那么多现金)? I'm also a bit puzzled by the 的 in this construction. Can anyone explain what it's doing, grammatically speaking?

May 17, 2012 at 9:34 AMOnly in China can being forced to take a trip to Hong Kong to apply for a visa be described as '挺方便‘！Unless this conversation took place in Shenzhen, I'd suggest a trip to Hong Kong to get a visa should probably be described as anything from '有点麻烦‘ to '格外不方便'!:)

April 13, 2012 at 9:21 AMThe boyfriend of one of my best friends in Shanghai is, or was, China Ironman champ (or at least was). I've only met him the once (they got together after I left the city)...lovely bloke from Sichuan who cooks brilliantly and even sent me packing on my last visit with a bottle of Wuliangye baijiu! This lesson has reminded me that I really must get in touch. So, er....thanks!

April 10, 2012 at 10:25 AMFrom the expansion sentences, it seems 偏 can be a useful way of 'softening' potentially awkward or offensive descriptions (ie. 偏胖的人). Can I use this for other adjectives eg. 偏吝啬，偏骄傲 etc.?
