February 24, 2010 at 8:40 AMThe double-n being pronounced as one n is just a result of speaking at a normal rate (somewhat quickly) and 'gliding over' the pronunciation, rather than enunciating super clearly. So, there isn't a rule for it specifically, it just happens naturally.

is translated as "Careful landslide". Caused quite the confusion with a friend of mine visiting from the U.S. :)

You're right, we have a very TV obsessed culture! Interestingly, going back to the U.S. after a 2 year absence, I was absolutely absorbed in the television. So much programming! Happy to be watching hardly any these days though. :)

Although, 'TV series' or 'TV shows' is likely a better fit for 电视剧. (i.e. Seinfeld is a 电视剧, but not a drama)

February 26, 2010 at 6:03 AMAh, 血. The character 血 can be pronounced both xiě and xuě. (and sometimes xuè when in multi-character words) Some dictionaries don't list the xue3 pronunciation, but it's more common to hear it pronounced this way and so now, more and more, both pronunciations are listed.
