May 13, 2009 at 9:22 AMGreat set urbandweller! I propose a game. I'll try to compose a response (in Chinese, lol) to one of your sentences, if I don't make a mistake, I get a point, 好不好?
A:我为你祈祷 wǒ wéi nǐ qí dǎo. = I prayed for you.
B:你也用一只山羊祭天了吗?Nǐ yě yòng yí zhī shānyáng jìtiānle ma? = And did you also sacrifice a goat?
(Apologies to Daniel Dennett)

May 13, 2009 at 3:53 AMActually I'd like to know what piece is called as well, and who's performing it. Can't we just get an answer here?

May 13, 2009 at 3:21 AMHere's a rough transcript of the podcast for this lesson that I've put together whilst studying. Any comments or errors, let me know. 让你们见笑了!

May 11, 2009 at 1:18 PM@bendide - yes you're right about the variable download speeds, but this time at least I've worked an effective cure by doing a system cleanup with this free software. I recommend it to anyone experiencing similar problems.
@baba - actually I'd say it varies around China. In the south of China (in my little corner anyway) one rarely sees 街, always 路. I understand in 北京 there are some pretty big 街!

May 11, 2009 at 7:25 AMAs for 'lucky first peeks' I find recently I usually get into new lessons pages by clicking on the comments that others have already made on them via the box at bottom right of the 'Me' page or the Community-Conversations pages, NOT because they have already appeared on the new lessons list, (and I am in China, so no apparent reason to be affected by the CPod timewarp).
And am I the only one noticing an extremely slow download speed for these files 80% of the time recently (and right now?)

May 11, 2009 at 1:31 AMWhat is going on with the quality control regarding the sound quality of these Intermediate lessons? The last one had annoyingly loud background music, in this one (as mentioned already) the volume of the dialogue is so low that it makes the whole podcast (imho) almost entirely useless. Have you got a trainee in the recording studio at the moment? Anyway looks like I'll be skipping this one, sorry folks.

May 10, 2009 at 1:19 AM@ dreldoradon - I think the instrument playing the music might be a 古筝 (gǔzhēng), which is a stringed instrument similar to a zither.
As for the piece of music, I don't know. It is quite lovely, but was too loud in this lesson!

May 13, 2009 at 1:12 PMProbably depends on the soul in question mike! Not many for mine most like! ;-)
Nice of 'Old Nick' to drop in anyway! I'm tempted to do a 'Dr. Faustus' and amaze you all with a sudden astonishing fluency in Chinese (and every other human and non-human language too maybe. In for a penny, in for a pound, eh?)
