The character 说 is pronounced shuō with the first tone (第一声 - dì-yī shēng). It does mean speak or talk. The sound is perhaps something like the English word "shore" pronounced in a high tone with no r sound.
The character 收 in 收听 is pronounced shōu with the first tone, and the meaning is something like to receive or gather in. The sound is perhaps something like the English word "show" pronounced in a high tone.
收听 (shōutīng) could therefore (perhaps) be literally translated as "receive listen" or "receive hear".
So when Jenny says: (as she sometimes does) 欢迎收听请问 (huānyíng shōutīng Qǐngwèn), the meaning would be something like: "Welcome to listen to Qing Wen".

@baba - mate I have a long way to go before I'll feel satisfied with my Chinese language ability! My wife is determined to perfect her English, and so I don't actually get a lot of practise in the home! (One reason I love CPod so much.)
That guy you mention must have been even less confident than me though if he really managed to never open his mouth in front of the in-laws for years, lol.

May 23, 2009 at 1:15 PMSurely there is a convention, a kind of unwritten rule one might say, of keeping somewhat to the point, to the relevant topic in these threads? I'm afraid I have to say that ANY mention and subsequent discussion of Amber in this thread clearly does not belong here.
bobt seems to have posted that info (in an almost identical manner) in 2 places on these boards where it did not belong. He could of course have simply posted a new topic in conversations letting everyone know about Amber, but didn't. He also chose to use a somewhat provocative word, twice. The word disingenuous comes to my mind.

"You're studying how to quarrel with me?" she just asked over the lunch table! lol "Well," I replied, "I think it's useful language to know, you'll never know when it might be useful."
Oh here's a rough transcript of the podcast I've been putting together whilst studying. I think I've got the Chinese parts pretty accurate, if it's useful for anyone else I'm glad.

May 22, 2009 at 10:32 AM@matt - it's not a big deal mate, the imperfections are minor this time, but if you want time references then how about John speaking from 00.20 to 00.23, the levels are well below the sections before and after. Happens again at 00.30 to 00.32, and intermittently after that whenever John speaks. I'm not complaining actually, just remarking on it and wondering if it's something you should keep an eye on.

"Fur coat and no knickers". Hmm... as Sebire said, I doubt anyone's said that in the UK for 20 years at least. (I had to think about that one longer than the hat & cattle one!)
Personally, I have no problem with the US slang/colloquialisms. Is it just that I've watched too much TV/movies in my life? I would have thought that these days, what with cultural convergence in the English-speaking world and the long-time economic dominance of the US, any English speaker would not be flummoxed by such talk for long!
I also think it's amusing how these words and phrases (once used) become a kind of oft-repeated refrain or in-joke. e.g. 'busting my hump' and err... Klingons. (lol)
Anyway one neat thing (notice the Americanism creeping in - lol) about this place is that we can learn from each other. It's a bit of a linguistic melting pot, 对不对?
As for pete's translations I guess it's true he lets his eye wander off the ball sometimes, and I'm sure he's reading and reflecting on every word of all this. But come on people, he and the other hosts work so hard to make ChinesePod the invaluable learning resource that it is! Let's give him a break.
