July 16, 2012 at 11:52 AMHa ha, that's funny. My personal view and experience is that in China the concept of female beauty is somewhat narrow-minded, not to say sexist. Unless a woman has the regulation 'big eyes', small mouth, white skin, stick insect figure, etc, she is likely to be considered ugly. Pointless to express the view: 各花入各眼!
A lovely Chinese woman of my acquaintance told me recently that many Chinese hold the view that 'foreigners like the ugly women in China' and are commonly seen with them. As many Chinese people enjoy openly expressing racist/sexist/xenophobic attitudes in the presence of foreigners I am actually unsure whether or not ignorance is bliss.

July 16, 2012 at 4:46 AMI'd say that for the most part they are crude, at least in the sense that they lack education or wider experience of the world. China is still largely a peasant society, this is just how it is. I wouldn't say it always indicates a derogatory attitude to be aware of this. Many country folks are lovely people of course, not their fault they lost the lottery of life.
