I think giving a watch is OK, especially as it's a gift from husband to wife, (I mean obviously they have a close relationship. I think the taboo on giving clocks as gifts applies mainly when you're giving a gift to a person you're not really that close to.)

You don't actually hear it (crystal clear) joe, but it's there. You're hearing authentic everyday Chinese as it's spoken. Just like in any language, sometimes sounds get truncated, dropped or garbled.

It'll be something to do with the AMS phil, (or is it the EMS?) If the air-conditioning in the CPod office broke down, it'd surely be something to do with that. You should know by now. ;) And don't ever change.

That's a rather marvellous suggestion actually. I'd wondered if something like that could [be made to] happen. Some of his words in this lesson have the ring of one who could become a Buddha.

Oh dear pete, "the great beasts who ruled the earth for millennia"? A slight under-estimation methinks! I guess paleo-biology doesn't light your candle, how otherwise could you get that many cliches into 3 sentences? lol

Podcast transcript here - (work in progress.)

That paper money for burning is called Hell money right? How come there's no burning of paper Rolls Royces and stuff? There's a great business opportunity for some bright spark.

My first time in Shanghai I was slipped a fake 50RMB note by a taxi driver, as I discovered to my joy when trying to buy medicine for a streaming cold. The next day I wrapped it round a 1 yuan coin and dropped into the hat (?) of a beggar woman in the street. Man, did she jump on it! That's what I say is, spread a little happiness, why not?

There was a bartender in Star Trek called Quark.

A Christmas thread in August? *sigh*
