July 14, 2009 at 2:04 AM跟 (gēn) can generally be translated as with, but you shouldn't always think it means that, there are exceptions.
Here's an example where it can clearly be translated as 'with'.
我常常跟爸爸一起去看足球赛。Wǒ chángcháng gēn bàba yīqǐ qù kàn zúqiúsài. (I often go to watch football matches with my dad.)
But 跟 (gēn) often means something like 'follow', e.g.
我在前面走，我的小狗在后面跟。Wǒ zài qiánmian zǒu, wǒde xiǎo gǒu zài hòumian gēn. (I walked in front and my puppy followed behind.)
In the classroom a teacher may say: 请大家跟我念。Qǐng dàjiā gēn wǒ niàn. (And it doesn't mean read with me, but read after me!)
