Homer Simpson, a sage for our times!

Always worth quoting this guy pete, (I feel we're just like brothers under the skin or something y'know dude.) And I agree with you about TV being as bad as the atom bomb (even though it does good stuff), and just the other day I was... doh, it'll have to wait dude, 动物世界 (Animal World) is coming on...!

So you were a lucky dog and a clever dog!

So many times young students of mine will ask me jealously about the freedom enjoyed by western youngsters. They sigh with envy and can hardly believe it! I try to tell them that working hard at school when you are so young is a good thing, that so many westerners regret that they didn't!

The grass always looks greener on the other side of the hill! 中文怎么说?( = How to say that in Chinese?)

Know what you mean mate, I was kind of surprised too! Hmm, maybe there's some kind of cosmic connection between liking KC's music and an interest in Mandarin Chinese?

可怜的小孩儿!中国父母真严格!我怜悯中国的孩子要考试,他们得学习很努力。Kělián de xiǎoháir! Zhōngguó fùmǔ zhēn yángé! Wǒ liánmǐn Zhōngguó de háizi yào kǎoshì, tāmen děi xuéxí hěn nǔlì. (Poor kid! Chinese parents are so strict! I feel sorry for Chinese kids when they'll have exams, they have to study very hard.)

go_manly, 加油,加油! Great work mate!

Oh I like the reference to 'Mother Television'! Like 'Mother Earth' or 'Mother Nature' right?

@xiaophil - 哈哈哈!I know that song well, grew up loving the Beatles. In the same situation, I think I'd have been a-mumblin'. (But I think you can usually rely on such slangy English not getting across to a Chinese audience!)

@calkins - hey man, I'd like to see that "all-(beautiful)-women Japanese ensemble" vid, but it seems to be blocked in mainland China, can you just post a link to the main page so I can get there another way?

@rj - dude, you know I like the taste of my own words! "21st Century Schizoid man", that's exactly what I meant by bombastic brilliance!

@pete - strangely enough "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" is one of those songs that I always (in the theater of the imagination) prefer performed by Elvis Presley, or at least someone who can channel him like this guy, (youtube so proxy it.) In fact I think there are a number such songs which should only ever really be attempted by people other than the ones that wrote them.

I saw Rush live in Liverpool when I was about 17. All the other guys of my age at school were into that kind of heavy rock, but to be honest I guess I enjoyed the album covers more. That was in the days of vinyl records of course, and an album cover could be a real work of art. Irrational of me 姐 (!), and I hope you won't mind me saying so, but I never had you down as a Rush fan!

xiaophil, yeah I guess you could call me that! I listened to all those bands in my youth (oops, my age is showing - lol), but recently I've been listening to King Crimson a lot and rediscovering how gorgeously and bombastically brilliant they were!

As for MJ I was never a fan, but the guy was a magnificent performer and a troubled soul, and I bow my head for his passing.
