Posted on: How to Say 'Probably' in Chinese
February 22, 2017 at 4:55 AM

A likely context in this sentence might be the mom and the son are speaking at 11 p.m. at home. The mom suspects that the dad isn’t coming home tonight since it’s already so late. He is probably already drunk outside on the street and can’t make it home tonight.

  • The mom says “爸爸恐怕不回家了”

The 了 indicate the situation is changed. He was going to come home but probably not anymore.

  • 爸爸恐怕不回家 doesn’t have the clue of “change of the state.”

If we are chatting about our dads and I’ve heard that your dad always stays overnight somewhere else. I might say 你爸爸恐怕不回家吧?meaning “I guess your dad probably don’t go home.”

I’m seriously explaining 去你的 here.

So…literally, 去 is to go, to leave; 你的 means your (way). 去你的 literally translated as “go to your own way/business.” If you say 去你的 with a tiny smile on it could just be a flirty “go away.” It’s this kind of 去你的 in this dialogue. “Whatever.” “Stop saying nonsense.”

If you yell 去你的 out loud it can be used in an extremely confrontational situations, such as when people cut in front of you and park in the spot that you were going to park. It sounds like “f*%k off! It’s my spot!”

Of course, when you are mad and yelling out that load, people are likely to add more syllables to show anger, such as 去你妈的!去你奶奶的! Hope this is helpful.

Ya. Here are some more example sentences to say it in Chinese way, rather than just translating from English. You could say

  • 对我来说,中文比较好学,因为我小时候学了不少中文,他现在才开始学。
  • 我的缺点之一是太没有耐心。

坏处 would be used to describe the context.  Just like the example sentences

  • 跟英国人做生意的好处是他们有礼貌。

If you only say 你的坏处是没有礼貌 People will understand it as the disadvantage of “interacting with you” is that you are a rude person. Therefore a better way to say it is

  • 跟他当朋友的坏处是他很没有礼貌。

Haha...Well...I kind of agree with your strategy since 要不然 can be used just like 要不 and 不然,except it's a three-syllable word so that it slows down the pace.

In this sentence, I would use 难处(nan2chu4), instead of 缺点(que1dian3)

  • 中国人学英文的难处是两个语言差别很大。Zhong1guo2ren2 xue2ying1wen2 de nan2chu4 shi4 liang3ge yu3yan2 cha1bie2 hen3da4

When talking about advantage in this case, it’s more like 好处, instead of 优点

  • 日本人学中文的好处是学习汉字比较容易Ri4ben3ren2 xue2zhong1wen2 de hao3chu4 shi4 xue2xi2 han4zi4 bi3jiao4 rong2yi4. The advantage for Japanese to learn Chinese is that learning characters is easier.

Hope this would help a bit.

休假 only puts emphasis on not working while 度假 feels morelike a fun and relaxing vacation time.

  • 我想休几天假去捷克学学瑜珈。wǒ xiǎng xiū jǐtiān jià qù jiékè xuéxué yújiāI want to use some of my days-off to learn Yoga in the Czech Republic.

  • 我想去捷克度假、学学瑜珈。wǒ xiǎng qù jiékè dùjià, xuéxué yújiāI want to have a vacation learning yoga in the Czech Republic

Both way of pronouncing ㄔ are pretty commonly heard. Since mentioning ㄔ as a radical is almost the only context you'll say the word, either way will be perfectly understood. Just like many other Chinese characters, chì is the official sound to be pronounced, and chī is a spoken sound.

Haha, it is a good question. Sorry I missed it. I’ll try to be helpful this time.

When 向、从 are translated as "from"从 is always followed by place or time. (or a start point of a range)

向 is followed by a subject that accept the action. (such as向我买、向我打招呼)

Here is an example. You want to say “I bought a book from a friend.”

  • 我向我朋友买了一本书。“我朋友” is the subject that sold you the book.

What if you really want to use 從, you can say

  • "我从我朋友那里买了一本书。"“我朋友那裡” makes it like a place, or literally a bookstore he owns.

_________________________________________________________________

If 向 is followed by a place/direction it’s the overlap with 往, like

  • 向左走。
  • 我希望孩子多走向大自然。(or 我希望孩子多往大自然走走。)

It's just the different fonts of Chinese characters. Imagine the character is a hand (夂) holding a wood stick (木), meaning something long shape. Therefore, it's 木 in 条.

Ya. As 蓝狗 said, 修养 can be used to describe a general personality.

  • 这个球员修养很好,别人再怎么惹他生气,他都笑笑地继续打球。The athlete is really self-cultivated. No matter how other players try to piss him off he just continues to play his game with his smiles on.

修養 can be some training or understanding in certain fields. (usually spiritual fields)

  • 艺术修养、道德修养、哲学修养

Whereas 修煉 must be related to religion kind of training. (or joking about it)

  • 我下周要考中文考试,我这个星期得闭关修炼。It’s my Chinese exam next week. I have to stop all other activities and concentrate on my studies this week.
