Really? Then how would you say it? After all, I would not want to be 'trying to over the top".

How about this? Could we use both words together? 我们差点没来得及赶上飞机

I always thought this 难道 could be translated as, 'could it be that...', for example 难道你不知到 (could it be that you don't know?)

Simon, I've been listening to this program for years, and have never heard an Australian accent. So which part of England are you from?

The guy is looking into a mirror whilst delivering the dialogue, so he's probably in a bathroom, hence the echo. It's probably not a bad thing, at this level, for us to be listening to dialogue which is not very clear. Much more realistic.

I would be much happier if the translations were more accurate, even at the risk of sounding a little offensive or inappropriate in English. My understanding of this dialogue is that when the wife says she's 在厕所, she doesn't say she's in the bathroom; she literally says she is using the toilet. Most folk will say 上厕所, meaning that they will use the toilet.

I think the cultural nuances are important to point out.

My ambition in life is to go back to Australia one day, find a Chinese guy who has obviously been there for some time and speaks the language well, take him to the best restaurant in town, and say, 'Hang on, this guy doesn't want a steak, somebody go out and buy him a bowl of rice because, as we all know, Chinese eat rice and only rice.' Then we can relax, and listen to 'Hotel California' without further interruption.
