September 20, 2012 at 10:27 AMSo, 嗯 can mean yes, no, ok, what, I agree, I disagree and can also just be a grunt. Quite a useful word. This should have been the first word I learned in Chinese :)

October 26, 2011 at 1:42 PMCome on, guys. You didn't really think that was a pregnant woman, did you? Well, I guess I'm quite accustomed to seeing that kind of shape, as I live in Shekou in Shenzhen. Not too many 小号 foreigners around here, I'm afraid.

October 20, 2010 at 10:47 PMWo shi Guangdong yen, cong Guangzou lai de. Wo si si si sui. Jintian de tianqi hen ye.
Pick the bones out of that lot! Maybe a lesson in the most horrific of experiences known to purists of Mandarin i.e. listening to people from Guangdong speaking their (non-native) Mandarin. "Tian bu pa, di bu pa, zhi pa Guangdong ren shuo Putonghua."

July 3, 2010 at 9:27 AMIn a colloquial sense, can 'laji' be used the same way we use the word 'garbage' in english e.g. 'this person is rubbish', or ' that movie was garbage'?

June 21, 2010 at 7:39 AMIn the text, we hear 'you ni zheyang de pengyou, suan wo daomei'. In English, we are probably more likely to say the equivalent of 'you ni zheyang de pengyou, suan wo hen xingyun', but with a sarcastic meaning. Does this sort of sarcasm work in Chinese? My experience suggests it doesn't.
Posted on: Talking about Mistakes (Part 1)
December 2, 2012 at 3:59 AMInteresting lesson in cultural differences. The girls in the studio seemed to be having trouble controlling themselves yet, like John, I wasn't exactly cramping up with laughter. Yet, they are probably mistakes we've all made at some point. Years ago, my Chinese teacher told me that, in the course of learning a language, we will make a million mistakes. So, he suggested I start talking as much as possible, and get those million mistakes out of the way as soon as possible.
