When using the word 之后 or 以后, it emphasises the sequence of several events. In this case, saying 游泳之后，我去看了电影 is able to point out what the time sequence is.
According to your sentence, it would be better to say 昨天下午，我游泳了，也去看了电影 without using 之后.

我明天 吃饭以后 要逛街
我明天 吃了饭 就要逛街

Both sentences mean you are going to do some shopping after having a meal.
The first sentence points out the sequence of two incidents, using the word 以后, which emphasizes the particular time of "after the meal". The second one is using the sentence structure (一)...就, which brings out the continuity of one incident immediately following another, and emphasizes "what is going to happen" after the meal.
