July 27, 2013 at 12:54 PMI apologize if it seems as if I am spamming, posting comments about Boston meetups right and left, but it seems like the best way to reach the hords of Poddies in New England. So anyway, Boston Poddies, we are getting ready for an end of summer Chinespod meetup. Meanwhile, some of us are going to the Boston Mandarin and the Longwood Medical Area Mandarin meetups. Come join us!

Posted on: Leaving a Tip
December 30, 2012 at 2:33 PMSo if we DO leave tips, we are imposing our Western values and culture. Sheesh. I think in our service industry, you try to do as good a job as possible so as to get as good a tip as possible. But maybe that puts an American server in a subservient position to the whims of the customer. Whereas, a Chinese server maybe just does the job for the basic pay. Just shows up and does the job, gets paid, and goes home. Maybe that system actually is more respectful to the worker! Wow, what an epiphany! What do my fellow Poddies think about this idea?

December 24, 2012 at 3:22 PMI just bought half a kilo of Szechuan peppers in Suzhou well visiting my daughter. My husband is bliss! The scent even through the plastic bag, is amazing! I haven't had a chance to listen to this show yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I almost never post comments but the subject of delicious food has brought me out!

October 19, 2012 at 3:13 PMSo, I'm visiting my daughter here in Suzhou and spending my days going through the local RT Mart, eavesdropping on every conversation, puzzling at all the package labels. Every day I make a shopping list and use the ChinesePod glossary to learn how to ask for what I need. Today I needed some tofu so the search of the glossary generated a bunch of sample sentences, including the last one in this lesson's expansion. Well, I had never had chou doufu so I bought it and cooked it up in my daughter's wok, to surprise her when she got home from work. Well, she was surprised alright! She knew what was on the menu the minute she walked in. I honestly assumed that ChinesePod would never lead me astray. Fortunately, I enjoy strong flavors! Someday maybe I will understand Mandarin well enough to know when something is being said tongue in cheek. For now, I will just have to be a little more careful.

September 7, 2012 at 2:38 PMDoes anyone have any comments about "old" people staying in hostels? My 24 year old daughter lives in China and we will be traveling when I visit her in October. Will I feel like an intruder in a hostel full of young laowei? I would kind of like to avoid spending a lot of money on Marriott hotels, since I spent a good bit of my extra funds paying for the extra leg room on my flights. Middle-aged legs need more coddling than 24 year old legs.
