I have the same question. In English, not only is it more polite to say "may" but as my father would always remind us, the meaning really is different. "Can I have some ice cream, Dad?" " You CAN.........but you may not."

I have never left a comment before! What I am studying is medical Chinese so as to be able to talk to my Chinese patients here in the Boston area. It can't be much easier for them here than it is for us when we are in China. I don't know if there is anything you could tell us about how to be more hospitable to our Chinese friends, especially in a medical setting.
