September 19, 2010 at 5:43 PMI really like this lesson, and I think it points out that Chinese binds much more closely to reality, to what the senses are doing, to what the action is, than for example, English.
When I think about it, offering someone some food, and saying, "try this," is really somewhat bizarre, and void of meaning. It does lead to lots of great comedy though. One could for example rub it on his or her arm, and say, hey, 很好吃！
But, 尝一下，is direct, and to the point. Let your taste buds do the talking.
Chinese is so elegant!

从圣迭戈到差不多旧金山(850公里)的天气很好. 冬天的时候加州北方的天气又冷又总是下雨. 夏天的时候北方的天气是干热， 但是春秋的时候北方的天气差不多好.
我住附近旧金山。这里天气真的很好！但是时不时有地震.

September 4, 2010 at 4:04 PMI've personally never owned a PC. I'm a Unix type. My wife had one up until 2002. She religiously ran her anti-virus software, Norton at that time, and yet, one unforgetable day, she could not run this software. The PC would crash. I tried to remove the Norton Anti-virus software from the registry and lo-and-behold the Windows binary to do this was gone ! Solution: Unplug the beast, put it in the garage, and go to the Apple Store. We purchased a dual processor MacOSX system, and we have never, ever again had a virus. This sytem has run beautifully for 8 years. We donated the PC to a local middle school.
Since I retired from Sun Microsystems in 2004, I've exclusively used MacOSX laptops and the Firefox (火狐 － http://www.mozilla.org.cn/ for those of you in 中国). 我真喜欢OpenSource软件.
I understand that PC's are inexpensive, and I wish that more Unix / Linux based systems with excellent UI's were available for everyone. A user should never, ever be required to know how to partition the hard disk: C盘, 等等... . Would you purchase an automobile if you 自己 had to reinstall the engine every few months, or if the tires exploded once a week? Of course not.
Happily, reinstalling the PC OS is 差不多容易 ... 不过这节课很有用. 我真喜欢学电脑的生词语。
Sorry for this long, minor tirade but I've been involved in computing since 1965 and MS's PC blunders have always made me 生气 ... I have tremendous compassion for what users of these system must tolerate, and I wish there was some that could be done to simplify their lives.
Well, we do have this SUPER ChinesePod staff and website, and that is indeed something to smile about !

September 26, 2010 at 6:36 AMAll I want to know is why did you wait so long to introduce something as easy and as important as 向？This is after all a high frequency preposition.
I've often received messages from my Chinese friends that say, "请向你的家人问好," and was not quite sure why they used 向, and 问好. At least now I know.
