We gave 红包 to a red dragon at dinner this evening. It was a Tet New Year's celebration. Lots of fun !

有意思! I'm not a text messager type except when traveling and it's interesting to look at these shortcuts in multiple languages. I tend to zip about the world often enough. Hmm. Maybe Henning can teach me some German text shortcuts (-:

kesirui's unabridged reference was an eye opener and fun. One really needs to type with care ! That's not always easy ... ah well .. good friends always laugh at humorous typos any how. What is LOL in Mandarin text messaging?

I've seen 88 even in email and had no idea what it meant.

Wow! About 3 years ago I requested that CPod do something on Chinese poetry. Finally, the day has arrived. Well worth the wait!

Hi lujiaojie,

Thanks for the excellent phrases. I'm not actually planning to use them. I'm mostly retired now. But, a long time ago I used both separated by 27 years.

Each resulted in a very positive change of employment. Times were a bit different then. But, in the early 1970's things were similar to now for technically inclined professionals. If one had a job, then one held onto it. That period lasted about 4-5 years. Then wham! Silicon Valley took off (-: Jobs galore ...

I thought this dialog was very well acted; Pauses, voice inflections and tone changes are all perfectly suited the situation.

Otherwise, on a related subject, how does one say

"I am quitting my job" in the sense that:

a) "I've had it, enough is enough. I'm out of here!"

b) "I am resigning to take another position elsewhere."

Hi Henning,

We were wondering about how your 30 hour trip 从夏威夷 to home  went. Great to have met you and your wife too!

John,

Maybe I was still a little jet lagged and not up for airport humor.  最近过多机场!

I did enjoy the lesson today (-:

Interesting lesson but exagerated with respect to being called a terrorist. The word is never used publically in airports from what I know. If an individual is really supected of such a thing, then they are taken aside for questioning.

Suspicious medicine may be confiscated, and that is rare. But, there are garbage bags full of illegal items at the end of security lines.

Things may be different in mainland China. I'm not sure. I've made over 40 international flights ... Most hassles are with visas, and this can be really tough.

Bye dear Amber. You'll be missed and you'll also be very happy and successful in New York.

Just want to say that your energy is contagious. I listen to Dear Amber and 请问 here in the A.M., and to be honest you are better in the morning than a great cup of CAPUCHINO !

All the best,

Bill

obitoddkenobi's article on possible  damage to the foetus from exposure to electromagnetic radiation is interesting. I'm wondering how much is speculative since one needs controlled studies like they are doing with mobile phones. Still caution is warranted. Why run the risk.

On the other hand there is no mention in this lesson of either smoking (and implicitly, exposure to 2nd hand cigarette smoke) that has been verified to damage the foetus. Similarly, exposure to lead poses very serious nervous system problems, etc.
