Curious - I didn't think it meant that at all. I think there's lots of examples that don't or didn't have universal suffrage. I think it has to do with not having a king or queen. I think the 'communist China' expression doesnt translate well.

三毛 is a boy with three hairs on his head. Search 三毛解放记 you should find plenty on this famous cartoon series by author 张乐平。The humour is wide-ranging from slapstick to satirical, often dealing with serious topics. The boy does ride a dog rather than a horse into 'battle'. I don't know about the dog cartoon story, but as this is so famous I guess a 'tribute' version is on the cards.

承德 sounds an interesting destination - can't say it was in my radar before. Nice idea to visit places with a native speaker too; definitely worthwhile for language and culture learning.

Plural you once appeared in respectable English but fell into dis-use. People like Jeff Fenech are helping bring it back!

这个问题 - this question

可 - [provdes emphasis]

把我给问住了 - ba expression. Whatever immediately follows 把 is being 'gripped' then what follows tells you what is happening to the thing being gripped. I am left stumped. I guess the 给 conveys the sense of 'left' but I haven't seen this before sk look for confirmation of this.

Urban myth? I travel by bus a lot and have never seen it, more's the pity. Seen a lot of weird things but never a strap-on tummy, so don't know about 'popular'. Sounds uncomfortable; id rather stand.

This is rare, in my experience, it comes as something of a shock. Almost archaic. I like it when I hear it. I'd go with it - kind of special. I wonder if it would stop people being friends? If you became friends it may go away naturally.

I recommend the day trip to 石林 Shilin as it is close to the perfect Chinese tourism experience. Lots of interesting culture stories. Pretty landscapes. Photo opportunities. It is likely to be crowded. You do have to be careful to avoid some tourist traps, like shopping on the way from Kunming, or back. But on the other hand, if you to experience what most Chinese tourists experience, go for it. It is perhaps not well set up for most foreigners. I avoided it for a long time, then when we finally went we had a great time.

xiaomai,

'to switch into traditional is a bit unneccesary.'

RWN makes a valid point here .. your comment I highlight above suggests you misunderstand the use of simplified vs traditional sets. You can't assume someone is 'showing off' using the latter.
