I don't disagree with what you say except that I wonder if the parents would be surprised. Particularly as they are migrant workers. In my three years living there I have observed many examples of extreme disregard for strangers. One (sociologist) commentator made an astute point - the contemporary Chinese life style is just one generation old; prior to that everyone knew everyone else - you were born, grew up, went to school, worked and died in the same place. You did not need to deal with strangers. Chinese society has quickly become very mobile and so you are surrounded by strangers. You are very tight with your friends and family but anyone outside that circle becomes a non-person, even the enemy. In the commentator's view the Chinese people have not yet learned how to live with strangers. This event is a harsh lesson.
I don't disregard the impact of one or two publicised cases of Good Samaritans being penalised by the legal system but the I prefer the previous explanation - everyone is to blame in a way.
PS. I saw a report that the first driver admitted to texting while driving as he hit the little girl.

October 9, 2011 at 8:56 AMSome good advice here from Jenny and John on Chinese hospitality. In my experience Chinese people are pretty good at calculating the obligationis involved - both between each other and with foreigners. Better than foreigners maybe because they have more practice.
Conversations like this have resulted in people landing in Australia on a couple of occasions where there was some expectation of returned hospitality (one guy slept on the floor of our bedsit for a week .. and it was fun). But we have outstanding obligations to scores of people ..

October 9, 2011 at 8:20 AMI was trying to translate the title of the lesson "The Glorious 了" .. using 光荣 as an adjective. A sticky wicket I see.
To make that a bit clearer .. I was trying to say
Glorious 了(deadpan)
not
Glorious 了!
I was trying to be descriptive, not exultant.
(I see now that it was a mistake to write the !! I was just excited about the lesson.)
If I am simply describing the 了as 'glorious' as you do in the lesson title, is it still '太光荣了' ?

October 9, 2011 at 6:37 AMNice show .. liked the music at the back end. Haven't seen Jay Chou live but did go to a 王力宏 concert - this reminds me of his style.
In China these days there is a lot of interest in other martial arts as well such as karate.
I was kind of disappointed to hear that Jackie Chan does not live up to everyone's expectations of authenticity -- he is however an authentic hero. And yes .. I loved that film too, seen it a few times. He plays a great drunk.

I don't know what secondary meanings you are referring to but would be interested to find out.
