‘we are making a hospitality series to cater for the industry's demand for Chinese language training as an effect of increasing number of Chinese tourists.‘

Interesting... am I right in assuming you are talking about Chinese mainlanders visiting North America?

I would think that the vast majority travel in a group, with an interpreter (visa restrictions are a factor), but there are some who are able to get visas for independent travel, mainly where they have children at school or university.

I had a funny experience in Sydney while waiting in a hotel lobby for a friend, a big Chinese group arrived with their interpreter. The interpreter gave them a loud 'debriefing' and one of the first things he told them was that in Australia there are TWO sheets on the bed, and that you sleep between the sheets. :)

Hi zhenlijiang

Only the first photo appears for me - perhaps Jenny is using a site for the other two that is blocked in China.

They look like the work of waiguoren - have a look for yourself at

Just noticed that my home is slandered (can you slander?) as 'nobody above 175 cm', 'drug trafficking' and 'unknown parallel universe #3?' RJ would enjoy and endorse the last of these descriptions.

Hi cmkchina

I gather you are from the UK?? Good to get a non-American view. :)

'a word a good step up from "pissed"'

No - it's not as far as I know.. neither are particularly polite, but neither are some Premiers. (Australia has six Premiers by the way, plus a couple of Chief Ministers.)

please (everyone), one's culture is not the standard from which all other cultures can be judged. We need to acknowledge the context of what is said and who said it, in what circumstances, etc.

We use these words differently, that is a fact of life.

'There be Monsters Yonder'

I live where there be dragons. :)

'Humorous map of USA'

There are a couple of humorous maps of China that have been posted and discussed on these boards, with a disparaging comment in each province. My province is the one where all the men are too short to be worthy of marriage.

I don't think the hosts discussed what 白酒 is made from, but implied that it is not rice, because they went on to discuss spirits made from rice. But rice is an important ingredient of 白酒, probably the only ingredient in some brands.

The famous 茅台镇 Mao Tai Zhen (the name of the town in Guizhou in south-west China it comes from) is made from sorghum, rice, wheat and corn, probably in that order of importance as that is the order on the label.

On the lid it says 纯粮酿造 chun2 liang2 niang4 zao4 (pure fermented grains.)

Oh these references might be a bit obscure, sorry. Have just watched the first series of Games of Thrones, right through. Great fun. Although it seems to be referenced to Europe it also reminds me of China.

Jenny's China consists of the north (Beijing) and the 'south' : Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu.. and Anhui (where the poor people live.) Overseas is Hong Kong Island. West of Nanjing is The Wall. Behind The Wall is where the White Walkers roam, spreading terror in the hearts of those foolish enough to explore the wilderness. Out here beyond The Wall some of us learn to live with the White Walkers and even speak their language.

Reminds me of those funny maps of the world that invert the usual perspective - Australia sits in the top half. Everything that is usually shown in the top half is there in the bottom half.

This is a very cool little lesson, thanks a lot. It reminds me of a question I had the other day. These key guys have a little cart and it stands out on the footpath all day, often under a big umbrella. They get a licence and there is a mark or sign on the ground that confirms that this is their spot. But where does this stuff go at night?  They have to have somewhere to store their gear right? Well, my local guy rents a tiny space nearby; he has to wheel his cart about 50 metres to a little door where there is storage. He puts his gear in there each night after he packs up. I think that several people store their stuff there and each must have a key to that door. There would be trouble if the key guy lost his key. :)
