The trouble with 'out of the box' is catching your thoughts which are now going in all directions. Okay, here's a few:

1. I wondered about postcode for 朝阳 but there are multiple postcodes, not useful when passing on vital information.

2. 朝阳 is directly east of the Forbidden City, so if Beijing was a clock face with North pointing to 12, 朝阳 is at 3 - suggesting 3 am.

3. A homonym 潮阳 is a place in 广东, the city is 汕头 Shàntóu (top of the hill/mountain) - again indicating 12 midnight.

I still like 12:30 am (based on number of strokes).

I'm done. :)

'享受过程是最重要的'

我也同意,我觉得李探长说是现代的孔子,大概他比我好, 我斗不过他!

I don't think anyone has suggested 1:38 am yet, based on 阳 read in 'Arabic' numerals (which is common in China). Baba first read it this way but read 日 as one, which combines Arabic numerals and Chinese. But if it is all Arabic it is 1:38.

Hey David, I'm a bit disappointed we have to wait for the next instalment for a definitive answer. Post mortems of the raid , drug caches possibly going missing, corpses may be rotting; time can be your enemy. Makes me wonder if we are contributing to some of the answers! Oh well, it's a little lesson on how history is written. :)

Maybe the raid was a complete stuff up and they are consulting their PR people on how to brief the media.

My visit to a club. Things get going about 9:30 pm or so but the club is already packed when we arrive. Manage to get a small table near the main stage because we are with a regular. The club is fitted out with a main stage/DJ station and several smaller dance floors in amongst small tables surrounded by several chairs; on the outside you have larger tables and comfortable seating. There are a number of flat screen TVs and disco balls. Music: very loud; conversation not possible without yelling. Dance music: at the moment Lady Gaga is all around. But there is almost continuous live entertainment – either professional singers, DJs, or the club’s resident dancers performing to the MTV clips. Yes, pole dancing. Patrons don’t get up and dancing until about 10:30 pm or so and then the dance floors are packed. The entertainers seem to be well-known – they have their many fans. There is also ‘party game’ style activities with prizes for winners of the party games (eg. design and make an outfit and wear it/perform up on stage. I don’t frequent dance clubs but I don’t think this happens in the West.) The club is strictly policed – there are several security guards; usually pretty serious looking bouncers (including helmets) but I saw some getting into the dancing. There are a dozen or so staff members getting you drinks and fruit, clearing tables. You pay for drinks per table, the cheapest option being about a dozen beers. Mixed drinks like vodka and orange juice are popular – all paid for by the jug. When you pay for drinks you also get a plate of fresh fruit. Clubs are popular where I live and they range from the seedy (I’m told) to the pretty cool. There are national chains of clubs. Just my limited observations. I’m sure that others are more qualified than me (particularly on how things go after midnight) so I hope that poddies will bring their experiences here. Ah, I didn’t see any ballet. :)

在这里钢管舞很流行的。 听说。。zài zhèli gāngguǎnwǔ hěn liúxíngde

'even the 蛆 sometimes used to time things will have taken flight.'

哈哈哈哈 。。

Right place, right time, wrong day. I like it. I feel like the Inspector trying to work with Miss Marple in the room.. 'Hurumph! Now you just leave things to me, this is police work, okay?' 'Yes, Inspector, of course I understand. Oh, by the way, you did notice the 蛆 didn't you? Yes, of course you did'. Beaming smile.

'we're given the date aren't we?'

Oh yeah, got a bit carried away & 迷途了 (lost my way), there & by your first post about the date, and because the dialogue says that the 日期 is included in the code - so the dialogue occurs on Oct 9 and you are saying that the code includes Oct 10, meaning the meeting occurs after midnight. Hope I got that bit right now. :)
