May 22, 2011 at 3:01 PMSorry my comment is a bit ambiguous - I am referring specifically to the last one. Thinking about it again, I am not sure if the photo is here because of an incorrect (but not really amusing) English translation, or because of the Chinese, but the colloquial use of B in China makes this a kind of unfortunate sign in Chinese. And caused a schoolboy snigger here. I assume the innocent meaning is that to get to (zone or area) B you need to keep going past the sign?

May 22, 2011 at 9:20 AMThere is a rumour that the producers did not get official approval for those train scenes, and all I can say is that those scenes had an authentically lawless feel to them. A real buzz.

May 22, 2011 at 9:11 AMHi Baba
Thanks mate for your advice. Mine is an iPod Touch 4 - it doesn't have the Hold button you refer to; I remember that from the iPod Classic. I can Power Off but I can find no reference to Hold in the Manual. It automatically goes to the Hold state and then you just turn it back on with the iPod Touch 4. So I still don't know how to Reset. The instructions in the Manual make no sense. (Actually they make me angry - the Manual says something like 'you will hardly ever have any problems with your iPod' - but it does not tell me exactly how to Reset the iPod.)
I can't download the latest version - that is the original problem I referred to. That is where this started. The Apple solution is to download the latest version but the latest version will not download. That is why I am trying to un-install the whole program and start again. But now there is no iTunes on the list of applications to allow me to use 'un-install'. I am left with this buggy software that does not appear in any directory.
Maybe the solution is to refresh the operating system on my laptop. Just kidding.
I'm going to see a software engineer in the morning - I will report back when I get a solution.

May 22, 2011 at 4:38 AMOuch - why would a native Chinese speaker make this sign?

May 22, 2011 at 4:02 AMHi cinnamonfern
This sounds promising - so I went to the iPod manual for resetting and it says 'The first thing you should do is use the Hold Setting, immediately turning it back off again'. What is the Hold Setting? I can't find any explanation of this.
The next step is to 'place the iPod on a flat surface'. I nearly laughed out loud - are they for real? The most advanced technical device known to personkind needs to be placed 'on a flat surface'? Anyway, I need to get past Step 1 first, then find a flat surface.

May 22, 2011 at 3:53 AMHey gidday Tal, long time no see. Welcome back to the boards, if only for a bit of a whinge. (I guess that it's good for the soul to get it out.)
Sorry to hear about your 'A-word' (Amazon?) problem - I like the line that the 'Kindle is not intended for China'. I hope you get your money back okay and that they don't hit you with a big administrative charge.
Yeah, the 'A-word' discussion is confusing, the Kindle is made by Amazon, right? Not Apple, but you are supposed to be able to buy books (eg. on Amazon) and have them synced to your iPad. But not in China. I understand that Apple wants 30% of the price of every book bought when using the Kindle app on the iPad. Seems reasonably in line with their business plan. I haven't taken the reader step but they are very popular out here - when I look over the user's shoulder (obviously these are not Kindles from what you say) it is always Chinese material on screen.

May 22, 2011 at 3:30 AMMy woes continue so I better make the problem quite clear. iTunes has stopped recognising my iPod - it no longer shows in the menu when I plug it in. So nothing syncs any more. The iTunes troubleshooter says to go to iPod preferences 'Summary' (which I cannot find in iTunes, but there is a re-set button) and reset the iPod. (That is why you lose everything off the iPod.) However, every time I follow these instructions to reset the iPod it prompts a download of the latest version of iTunes, which fails (tried six times.) Then I was told by a computer expert to un-install iTunes and start again - BUT every attempt to un-install has failed! Weirdly, iTunes is no longer listed under applications in the Control Panel, but it is still installed on the laptop (it remains in my applications menu). So I have this dodgy iTunes on my laptop that I cannot see how to un-install. I have tried two routes: the 'un-install programs' route and the 'list of applications' route, but iTunes is no longer listed.
Any ideas?
Hi sh ke li - thanks for your advice, you must be an Apple fan. Sounds like a mean joke. :) I had iTunes problems with my previous iPod (it would not read my iPod because the iPod had previously been used on a Mac); I took it to the Apple store in Sydney and after a number of hours they simply printed off about six pages of fine print, a technical paper on resolving these difficulties, but admitted that they were beat. Why not buy a new iPod that has not been used on a Mac? Finally I gave the iPod to a young Chinese maths student I know and he cracked it, so my experience with Apple Stores is not a happy one.

May 22, 2011 at 4:03 PMAh that sounds familiar, even though none of my dictionaries say that. B is an impolite word for a part of the anatomy.
