February 17, 2012 at 7:27 AM的士 is actually pronounced something like dìkxí (that's the best appromixation I could come up with) in Hong Kong, which is very similar to the Engish "taxi". Or, as my dictionary states, 英语taxi音译。

January 22, 2012 at 8:17 AMIn Changchun, people usually say 大回 for 左拐 and 小回 for 右拐, because a left-hand turn is bigger when at an intersection. I've even had people in Harbin say that I must have lived in Changchun, because I used those terms. I actually find them easier then others words for turning.

January 22, 2012 at 8:08 AM狭隘的隘 should be fourth tone. It's interesting that you bring that up though, because my dictionary specifically mentions 统读ài，不读ǎi. Where did you see the third tone pronunciation?

January 22, 2012 at 5:31 AMI should add that my one of my friends was familiar with the terms GSM and CDMA. When I showed her the Mandarin, I had the impression that she understood the meaning but would rarely, if ever say it that way.

January 22, 2012 at 5:22 AMA couple technical terms that I find helpful for increasing vocab both in Mandarin and English. They may not have immediate, practical purposes but can still be interesting. GSM in Mandarin is 全球移动通讯系统, and CDMA is 码分多址. GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications. Looking at the Chinese, 全球 means global, 移动 means mobile, just like the telecommunications group, 通讯 means communication or radio dispatch, and 系统 means system.
CDMA, or Code Division Multiple Access, is a bit shorter and simpler in Mandarin. 码 means code, 分 means division, 多, many or multiple, and finally, 址, means location or site, as in 地址, 网址.
Perhaps some of this seems very specific, but I find it helpful for looking at words in a different light to remember them.
