Posted on: Bringing Pets into China
February 14, 2011 at 5:18 AMNicole, happy to help! We just arrived safely with our 2 black monsters :-).
Important thing when you move back, get the export certificate in time and: I did a dummy process when I had all the documents complete. Gov might be a little annoyed, but you know for sure there are no last minute surprises when you do it for real!
Also, keep the "proof" that your pet is Rabies free from your home country, this is important when you move back. We contacted the customs on forehand and let them send an email with confirmation after they gave us a go to go back (we explained situation and handed over all docs by mail).
Good luck and when you have a question when the time comes, feel free to ask! :-)

February 8, 2011 at 10:04 AMNp, If you guys do a lesson on exporting pets, I can help you write the story line: it includes shady documents & procedures, an impossible deadline / request , bad customer service, lazy ill-tempered government officials and an interesting twist: a very polite high level official being extremely nice and helpful, because you speak Chinese!
Let's hope it works out tomorrow and I can bring 小瘦子 and 小胖子 back home haha!

For all the pet lovers out there: one word of advice, keep up with the yearly rabies shots and keep the receipt, 发票 and have an animal passport (Chinese) in which the government approved animal clinic will put the rabies shot label and have it signed and stamped. This will save you a lot of trouble and money when you want to take your 宝宝 back.
Advice #2: be patient & polite at the quarantine office and try to speak Chinese. This helped me a lot!

February 8, 2011 at 3:57 AMWhat a timing, I am busy exporting my two cats from Nanjing to Amsterdam (we leave China in 3 days). Let's say I could not have chosen a better time than around CNY :-).
Importing the cats 3 years ago was a challenge and I would never ever do it again via Shanghai!
Posted on: The Various Guises of "Until"
February 2, 2011 at 7:47 AMAfter having studied every QW "until" now, I did not notice the quality going down. Maybe even the opposite: lately there have been some interesting upp int QW's, which I think is great! Now if there only could be some advanced ( Chinese only) QW in the future? It couldn't get any better I think... :)

February 2, 2011 at 12:25 AMMy Chinese name is 玛秋琳 my ayi gave it to me when I just arrived in China. Actually do not know if it is a good one or not, but I am used to it and like it : ). Most of the time people will address me as 玛小姐 or "老板娘"。

Posted on: How to Address Someone
January 25, 2011 at 12:24 AMHello Marcojane,
Last week I was shopping for pearls in Suzhou and two (obviously respected) Buddhist monks (who were buying pearls for a Buddha statue) were addressed as 师傅 (shi1fu5)by the owners of the shop (who are Buddhist themselves).
