It's just a hilarious video, because there is no mention of the word "剪" (jian3, cut) in it, even though the title is "At the Hair Salon." He should have said, "还没剪头发呢" instead of "还没付钱呢".

As John explained in the lesson, Vietnamese language was deeply influenced by Chinese and Chinese characters in ancient times, and there are a great number of Chinese words in the language, just like Korean and Japanese.

Vietnamese didn’t have its own notation system until the 14th century, and therefore people had no choice but to write in classical Chinese (文言) before that, and, in a way, it was a status symbol for intelligentsia in 越南 at that time.

Vietnamese people began to write in their own language by use of Chinese characters, borrowing their sounds, after the 14th century, and later Vietnamese was gradually romanized when the country was a French colony.

Vietnamese government officially announced the elimination of Chinese characters in 1954, and 汉字 are not used in the language now. I think that the historical situation of Vietnamese is very similar to that of Korean.

And so “河内” is not a transliteration of Hanoi. It IS the other way around. In Vietnam and Korea, place and people names traditionally have been  Sinicized, such as 胡志明 (Ho Chi Minh), 阮高祺 (Nguyen Cao Ky) and 李明博 (이명박).

Hi xtna,

I also think that "狗狗" sounds a little childish, and actually I often hear Chinese children use it. Probably 大狗 is much more frequently used than 大狗狗.  Btw, wow, your dog is a boxer! I have to tell my chubby dog not to pick a fight with him! She is a Shih Tzu (西施犬, 狮子狗, a lion dog), but she doesn't live up to both breed names.

P/S. 西施 is the name of a famous beauty in Chinese history.

Hi xtna,

Haha, a big dog is called "大狗" (da4 gou3) or "大狗狗" in Chinese. My chubby dog weighs 18斤 (9 kgs), i.e. about 20 pounds, so she is small enough to be called 小狗, but at the same time, she is fat enough to be jokingly called 胖狗 (pang4 gou3) by my neighbors.

When I walk my dog here in China, local Chinese children usually call her "小狗,狗狗,and 小狗狗".

When you refer to your dog in Chinese, you can say "我的小狗,我的狗狗,小狗宝贝(bao3 bei4),小狗宝宝 etc", although some of them might sound a bit narcissistic to other people.

I always refer to my chubby dog as "我家的胖狗 (wo3 jia1 de pang4 gou3)", but she doesn't like it very much.

Hi auntie68,

I think that it’s actually not so easy for native Chinese speakers to maintain high motivation to keep visiting Chinesepod, which is a podcast for learning Chinese.

I remember that not a few natives posted comments before, but almost most of them have already gone. I know some natives come here to study English, but after all Cpod is NOT an English learning podcast.

Having said that, I myself come here to learn both Mandarin and English. I’m not saying this to flatter you, but do you know why I read all your comments every day?

Of course, it’s because your opinions are worth hearing (and sometimes a bit provocative), but also because reading your English is very beneficial for me. I believe that Cassie would readily agree with me.

Anyway, I just hope that more native Cpod staff will “unofficially” join discussion and post a comment preferably in Chinese.

Hi hitokiri,

上瘾 (become addicted) is a verb, and 恶习 is a noun.
Gambling is a very addictive bad habit.
