Hi sophie,

Gee, I should have come up with "知己" earlier, because there is the same word "知己" (chi-ki) for "soulmate" in Japanese. I've just found that 知己的朋友 and 知己伙伴 are being used on the Internet.

Well done, sophie 同志!

Hi henning,

You can find a lot of things titled "青春小鸟" on the Internet, such as songs, manga, novels, and so on.  Looks like it's a kind of set phrase in China.

我的青春像一只小鸟一样飞走了,就不会再回来!
我的黄昏像一条胖狗一样慢吞吞地走过来了,就不会再走开!

Hi Chinesepod, academic team.

I would appreciate your opinion on the “” problem bankangde pointed out above. Actually, I’m not so sure whether “” means “啊,哉”, or “于之” as bankangde said. There are three possible answers to this. Thanks.

  • is a 语气词, such as and .
  • means “于之”.
  • Still no accepted interpretation for this.

Hi s0395617,

There are some interesting Chinese words related to overseas study (留学).  I think they are really funny and nicely invented!

海归 (hai3 gui1)
persons who came back from overseas (
= return)

海待 (hai3 dai4)
persons who came back from overseas
and still can’t get a job in China (
= wait)

Those “play on words” are really excellent, i.e., 海归 (hai3 gui1) is the parody word of “海龟” (hai3 gui1, turtle), and 海待 (hai3 dai4) is of “海带” (hai3 dai4, kelp). 海归 has a longer history than 海待 has.

In the 80s and 90s, there were a lot of opportunities for success for 海归 in China, but it’s not so easy even for them to get a good job these days. You occasionally come across the phrase “海归变成了海待” on the Internet.

Hi henning,

Thanks a lot for the link. I remember reading a related article before in a Korean news site (日语 edition), which impressed me very much, because the Korean scholar accomplished such a great project despite the fact that Chinese characters are not being commonly used in Korea anymore.

On the other hand, I think that the publishing of the world largest Chinese dictionary (Chinese-Korean) would still have considerable significance for the Korean society since not a few Korean people are learning Mandarin recently, inspired by their close economic relationship with China.

As for the number of listed Chinese characters, 中华字海, the one I mentioned in the above comment, still maintains the first place in the world, but this dictionary only contains 汉字, just like famous 新华字典, but not words and phrases. So pricewise, it isn’t beyond OUR purse. Why don’t you buy one?

Btw, 妻子 (qi1 zi) = a wife,
妻子 (qi1 zi3) = a wife and children (书面语)
