April 24, 2008 at 1:33 PMHi sophie20461, Of course, I don’t know how to properly say “撒娇” in English, but interestingly enough, there is an almost exact translation in Japanese, i.e. “甘える” (ama-eru), although the word has other meanings than “撒娇” depending on the situation.

April 24, 2008 at 7:56 AMHi wiggin01, I’m very please to hear you got interested in that info. Actually I also felt a bit excited when I found that article. I heard before that Taiwan is ahead in the area of Chinese linguistics. A lot of Japanese linguists are using photo print editions of classical Chinese literature published in Taiwan.

April 24, 2008 at 3:55 AMI’ve found an interesting article, which claims that the pronunciation “han4” (和) in Taiwan WAS originally a Beijing dialect! And it was imported to Taiwan after the war through the people and dictionaries came from China. Interestingly enough, the pronunciation “han4” has already disappeared in Beijing. Anyway, “han (和)” is not an original Taiwan dialect, and that is just why I couldn’t find it in my dialect pronunciation dictionary. I see it now! http://www.bato.cn/html/index.php/t-219409.html

April 24, 2008 at 3:27 AMHi kien, I heard that the concept of “7-day week system” began to (very gradually) prevail in China after Christian missionaries, such as Matteo Ricci (利玛窦), came to China at the end of Ming dynasty, circa around the 16th century. Anyway, both 明朝 and 清朝 didn’t adopt the system. “星期”, in the sense of “a week”, is said to have appeared in writings for the first time around the turn of the 20th century. And the “星期 (礼拜)” system , as well as the solar calendar, was officially introduced in China in 1912, with the foundation of 中华民国 (The republic of China). “星期” originally meant “七夕” (qi1 xi1), July 7 on the Chinese calendar, which is sometimes called “Chinese Valentine’s day. “ If you’d like to know more about the romantic (and rather tragic) legend, please click the link. April 23, 2008 at 9:39 AMI felt very depressed when I learned incredibly complicated Chinese family titles for the first time, but instead I felt very pleased when I learned that days of the week in Chinese were so easy to remember. Otherwise, I would already have given up learning Chinese!

April 25, 2008 at 2:02 AMHi lydia1981, 我家胖乎乎的小狗有个毛病，就是癫痫(epilepsia)。虽然病情并不严重，好像是一个月只发作一次，可是癫痫发作的时候，我实在担心死了！ 芭迪每次发作之前都一定要找我，她在我旁边躺了以后才开始发作。可能是”主人, 我快要不行了, 求求你救救我!”的意思吧。真是太动人啊！
