It seems that a combination of 七 and 八 generally doesn’t have a good connotation in Chinese. 七长八短 irregular in height and length 七高八低 irregular in height 七零八落 scattered and decayed 七手八脚 confusingly busy 七嘴八舌 everybody trying to talk at once 七上八落 = 七上八下 in a terrible fidget 七倒八歪 off-balance 七颠八倒 topsy-turvy 七老八十 a very old person 七拼八凑 knock together, rig up 七七八八 miscellaneous ---------------------------------------- 七情六欲 emotions and lusts of human being

My boss looks a bit cranky probably because I have been flipping dictionaries since I got behind my desk this morning. Let me just show you some typical examples without explanations in English. 建筑 and 建造 seem to be often interchangeable. The verb 建设 can take both abstract and concrete objects, such as 建设小康社会 and 建设房子. 建设….建设社会主义国家，建设小康社会，建设房子 建筑….建筑高速公路，建筑宿舍，建筑铁路，建筑房子 建造….建造高层大楼，建造油船，建造房子 建立….建立新中国，建立外交关系，建立友谊 成立….中华人民共和国是1949年成立的。 设立….设立新的机构，设立学校，设立俱乐部 树立….树立榜样，树立威信，树立远大理想

April 19, 2008 at 2:45 AMHi hitokiri6993, As auntie68 told you in the above comment, some of Chinese characters are 多音字 (duo1 yin1 zi4), or multi-reading characters. They are cumbersome and even native speakers sometimes make a mistake, but no need to worry. Chinese 多音字 are just “a piece of cake” compared with those in Japanese. Every Japanese kanji character commonly has several readings at least. The most extreme example is “生”, which has more than ten formal readings. According to one estimate, there are about one hundred and fifty readings for the kanji “生” if you include all the irregular readings used in the names of people and places. On the other hand, “生” in Chinese only has one reading!
