As I see it, saying 他去了上海了 you are advising of his experience without using the 过 particle. Thad said, my question is would it also mean he hasn't come back yet, or we don't know it because there just is no information about that?

Can anyone clarify my doubt?

@Aussie: that 了implies you are still in China, in other words 你学了两年之后就到中国去了。A possible question may be 你在中国已经有了多长时间了？And so on.... : )

Yet, 我学了两年的中文就到中国来了 is meant to indicate that after having studied Chinese for two years I came to China (and I'm still there). Unlike the previous sentence, 我学了两年的中文就到了中国去 is meant to indicate that after having studied Chinese for two years I went to China and then I left after some time.

That's how I would express myself. Is it correct?
