Posted on: Dancing in Public
December 8, 2010 at 6:37 AMWhen I was in Houhai in Beijing back in September, I was amazed to see so many folks dancing in public. I thought it was some special event but doubted for some time since the speakers were tinny. After this lesson, I realize it's quite a common thing...though I didn't see this in Shanghai.
Jenny is right in that it was mostly older folks.
It was ballroom dancing all night long.
I wish I could post a pic I took but dunno how. :-(
Posted on: Going to the Gas Station
November 18, 2010 at 7:29 AMWhen I was in Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai, I was so surprised to see so few gas stations. I don't think I saw one gas station in Shanghai (Xujiahui, Waitan, Pudong). But I did see so many cars. Given the gas stations I saw in Beijing and Xi'an, and the vast number of drivers, I was also surprised that the gas stations were not crowded.
Go to any Costco in the US, and that's one crowded gas station.

November 2, 2010 at 5:17 AMCan someone explain the difference b/w 押金 (ya1jin1) and 充值(chong1zhi2)? For example in the lesson, the guy adds 100 RMB, w/ 20 RMB for the 押金 (ya1jin1). Does that mean 20 RMB is gone? If he can still use the 20 RMB 押金 (ya1jin1) , why even have one?

Posted on: Wang Wei's Diary: Food and Girls
October 17, 2010 at 7:54 AMJust curious, but why does Jenny think that Wang Wei is very messed up? He takes Li Yan out for Italian food and thinks she's cute,可爱. He thinks Yang Jie it stuck up, wears strange clothes, but is quite pretty,漂亮. My guess is that he continuously looks at Yang Jie because:
1. she wears strange clothes
2. she is pretty
3. combination of 1 & 2
Am I missing something?
Nevertheless, great lesson loaded with a wide range of vocabulary!

Posted on: What have you done in 2009?
August 19, 2010 at 6:48 AMWow. ChinesePod - you must be psychic.
All these things happened to me in 2009, in that same particular order too.
Great lesson though, brought back memories. :)

得 = "de" or "dei"
In this sentence, it's "de": 对。你中文说得真好!
But in this sentence, it's "dei": 但是你得跟我练习说中文。

Posted on: Picking Up a Friend at the Airport
December 8, 2010 at 8:03 AMJust curious, but in China (and Chinese culture) what is the extent of "seeing someone off" at the airport? Do you:
> drop them off at passenger drop off, give them a hug (or handshake)
>park, walk w/ them w/ their luggage to the check-in
>wait for them to get their boarding pass
>walk them until you can't walk any longer up to the security gates?
