January 16, 2009, 07:57 AM另类 (另類) lìnglèi - not really 'bizarre'...might be better rendered as "alternative" (maybe with the quotation marks, since the speaker looks down on it)

December 11, 2008, 08:10 AMAbout the 則 as used in the dialogue, it expresses contrast in the way English "but", "whereas" and (especially) "on the one hand..., on the other hand..." Especially the latter because it can be used in the same pattern: A 則(是).., B 則(是) -- On the one hand A (is)..., while on the other hand B (is). Leaving out the first 則 is like "A is .... B, on the other hand, is...
That's the sense of it. More commonly it gets translated as "but", "then" or "and" (less contrast), or even not at all: "He's good. I'm not so hot." could be rendered well using 則.

December 10, 2008, 02:46 AMWonder if there has been a detectable "Viagra effect" on things like tiger bone and rhino horn...Seems like so many of the real tragic cases are all about the 陽.

March 18, 2009, 02:09 AMFor me, the key word was 'unscripted' --unscripted and natural language at natural speeds. I think that explains the positive reactions, mine included. Liked the longer length of the dialogue without the repetition. More lessons like this would really help.
