September 25, 2008 at 4:05 AMI too wondered about Peter's pronunciation--intentional 洋腔洋調 by fluent speaker (for sake of realism) or not? Maybe it's just the fact that it is being read (or recited from memory) that makes it sound 'fishy'. Either way, I found it much harder to understand Peter than the 經理.

Oh, and then there's 冬瓜糖, which is both the sugar, which comes in dark brown cakes and is what is used (supposedly) to make 冬瓜茶, and THE most melt-in-your-mouth sweet i've ever had. Looks like big white sticky hunks of sugar, but when you put it in your mouth, you know its something else: wetter, and so sweet, you can hear the cavities forming. Good New Years treat.

冬瓜茶 is pretty popular around these parts, but I have a hunch its really just sugar and water.

September 10, 2008 at 2:03 AMOn 尽量, I suspect most speakers would say jin4 liang4 (instead of jin3 liang4), even though the unsimplified character is 儘 jin3 and not 盡 jin4 as in 盡力 (do all one can to; to the best of one's ability). In fact, if you compare Google searches, you will find far more hits for 盡量 than for 儘量! Learners of Chinese should be taught the prevailing pronunciation, no?
