July 8, 2012 at 7:39 PMThanks for the referral. I just listened to 0557 and read the comments. I had no idea that suibian could mean sexually promiscuous! I don't think the author I was referring to (of Foreign Babes in Beijing, 2005) knew, either, or she would have shown some upset at the description. Maybe it's another of those regional variations.

July 8, 2012 at 7:36 PMThanks--I don't think I've ever heard 肆意 si4yi4 before--another addition to my vocab list!

July 7, 2012 at 2:00 PMThree questions--
I read a book in English that said American (women in this book) are all suibian. Is that the same suibian you are talking about?
Is there a difference in usage between 买单 and 埋单?
My dictionary says 任意 means "willfully, arbitrarily," which doesn't fit your examples--has the word lost its negative connotation?
Thanks

July 6, 2012 at 2:20 PMIn the "Lesson Information" "Topics" you have "smog." Is it a typo for "Smoking?"
Interesting lesson--I had thought acupuncture was a more common treatment for smoking cessation.

July 4, 2012 at 9:48 PMI don't know if anyone at ChinesePod will see this very belated comment--I just finished the five lessons on Li Tanzhang's "final mission," and loved them all!
非常感谢。也非常感慨。希望以后有机会再次跟李探长见面。
Yes, Li Tanzhang deserves a rest, but it would be great fun to see him brought back on a difficult puzzle. I'm not good on puzzles, but enjoy seeing Babardwan's (whatever that name means) struggle with them.
Luckily for me, I see that there are earlier episodes to pursue...

June 19, 2012 at 1:31 PMA lot of Chinese students are coming to the USA as undergrads now--I wonder if that's taken any pressure off the Gao Kao?

June 13, 2012 at 3:28 PMIf you can get Youtube, look for "Song Zuying My Motherland" -- it has Lang Lang on piano, and Song Zuying singing -- complete with subtitles. I really couldn't tell the difference in Chinese and Western singing styles from it, however. Song Zuying is beautiful, but I must say I prefer Renee Fleming.

May 22, 2012 at 6:50 PMThis was fun. I'm curious--did David do research to come up with the stories, or do all Chinese learn them in school?
