tucsonmichael, in the sentence 听说他是一名运动员, 名 is a measure word 数量词 (shùliàngcí) for people, athlete in this case 运动员

RJBerki, sure, you are the native - but your example doesn't fly - "sports medicine" is on the same pattern as "athletics medicine", exactly my point. But both "sport" and "sports" are nouns, like "athletics", unlike "athletic". You wouldn't say "sporty medicine", would you. Usage is what it is, but I don't think you can discuss what "adjectives" mean?!

actually, "athletic injuries" isn't correct either, "athletic" is an adjective, and injuries are not "athletic". what would be correct is "athletics injuries", with "athletics" as a noun. Only doubt I have is whether the apostrophe is required, i.e. "athletics' injuries", but hey, I'm just the advanced learner here.

BTW, while google is a useful reference it can also be misleading. just because a particular expression comes up more frequently doesn't mean it's more likely to be correct. Could simply be that it's used more (resp. less) often

"Athlete injuries" doesn't seem correct but both "Athletes' injuries" and "Athlete's injuries" are, albeit with different meanings : "Athletes' injuries" - the injuries suffered by athletes (in general) "Athlete's injuries" - the (multiple) injuries of one athlete

受伤 is what Peter the Canadian should have been, had manager Li 李经理 (Lǐ jīnglǐ) given him a beating 打伤 (dǎshāng) if he'd been serious about teaching him a lesson 教训 (jiàoxun).

like changye I understand why you'd want to 520 or PMP rather than enter 汉字 on the numeric keypad of a cellphone, a bit like "c u" for "see you" in English - basically shortcuts for convenience. It seems to me “偶稀饭” for ““我喜欢” is different, more of a code, a group identity thing maybe, so slang proper.

sorry tucsonmichael, but SMS / chat slang does get you into the intricacies of the language, double-meanings, homophones etc. and it does get quite complicated.
