December 16, 2012 at 7:53 AMI want to add a school of thought to Mark's list of the main schools of thought behind home-schooling. That is, some parents believe (myself included) that they can give their child an education superior to what a school can provide. Schools must necessarily provide "cookie-cutter" experiences, where each child receives relatively the same treatment. They are unable to provide much one-on-one instruction, and they must necessarily spend some of the time available for instruction each day on things like modifying classroom behavior, collecting lunch money, and such.
I'm a teacher myself (I taught elementary school in the USA for several years). I believe that even "unqualified to teach" parents can give their children a superior education at home, providing they have a patient temperament, the drive and desire to do so, an understanding of how their child is different from themselves, the ability to research teaching methods and materials, and the ability to diagnose their child's strength's and weaknesses. Oh, and they must understand that homeschooling has its downsides (lack of social peer interaction, lack of writing instruction, etc.) and be willing to find ways to address each of these issues.
This isn't to say I didn't provide the students in my classroom with a fantastic education. I absolutely gave them everything I had, and their test scores (bragging here) were consistently above grade level. But give me just one or two students (instead of 25) for 6 hours a day, and I could have done even better.

December 13, 2012 at 9:07 AMHmm. If they corrected every single written mistake we made, we would likely become quite disheartened. It's not necessarily a profitable endeavor to have your every mistake corrected, anyway. The very act of producing a quantity or written/verbal material in and of itself improves your language skills.

November 23, 2012 at 1:15 PM“。。。那么有时候恐怕很容易就能够打破僵局。” I am comfused by the use of "恐怕" here. I read the translation ("then sometimes it's easy to break the ice"). I had thought that 恐怕 could only be used in a bad situation, a situation one doesn't want to happen, as in, “。。。那么有时候恐怕很难打破僵局。”
Could you give another example or two of situations in which 恐怕 can be used concerning a situation you want to happen?

November 22, 2012 at 5:27 AMI like your idea, except in regard to hunger. If a super-skinny underfed child begs from me, and I buy him a hamburger, and he gulps it down, then finds his friend so I'll give his friend one as well, how could I refuse him? In this case, I think that, no matter how busy we are, how late we are for a meeting, or how little cash we have on us, we ought to stop and buy the food.
I do agree that we should give to charities that help. I haven't found those kind of charities in China, who reach the people who slip through the cracks, in my city anyway. If they do exist, I just don't know how to find them.

November 21, 2012 at 4:04 AMWhat is "baguette"?
I actually like the "hairy meat" that often tops the breads. But I don't like the airiness and "sweetness" of the actual bread. "Sweet" in China, as it pertains to bread, is a different kind of "sweet" than in the USA. Or, maybe it's just not sweet enough to register as a pleasant taste on a tongue accustomed to Dunkin Donuts!

November 21, 2012 at 12:01 AMThank you for your ideas. I can't consider it to be abandonment because the father definitely loves, and will never abandon, his daughter. I've known them for two years, he adores her. And, every penny of his every day's work would be going to her. And, he would see her every New Year, and call her often.
But I do agree with you that the child may feel as if she has been abandoned, and this could create serious problems for her when she is older and trying to succeed in a tough and unforgiving world.
