November 6, 2012 at 1:05 PMI do realize this is a problem, but I think it would be mostly solved if all states were to do what Maine and Nebraska do, that is, instead of having a "winner takes all" system in which the winner of a state's popular votes gets all of their electoral college votes, the electoral votes are allotted proportionately, so that if a candidate gets one-third of that state's popular vote, he also gets one third of that state's electoral votes.
Of course, candidates would still favor areas where population is high and where voters are undecided, but that seems fair.

November 6, 2012 at 10:01 AMWe (the USA) have this system because we began as a group of loosely united states. Each state was (and still is, to varying degrees) rather reluctant to give up its independence to a national government. So, each state gets a certain number of votes, based on how many people belong to that state, and one representative for each vote gets to go to the national level and formally elect the new president. When I cast my vote, I'm actually helping my state decide who will represent my state's votes to the national government, a Romney-leaning representative or an Obama-leaning representative.
I kind of see the point for this system, because I like the idea of being reminded that our national government is supposed to be answerable to our state governments.

November 8, 2012 at 7:30 AMDo Tea Party folk believe English should be the official language of the US? Because I'm a tea party gal, and I don't believe that.
As a tea partier, though, I am curious as to where the money came from to supply a sticker to every one who voted! That's a lot of stickers...
