10% is typical in the UK, but there's no big deal if you don't leave one.

Couldn't agree more! It is not the responsibility of the customer to ensure waiters are paid fairly. We have minimum wage laws for a reason, and the government should amend the law in the US to say minimum wage can not include tips. They should be received over and above the basic wage that you need to survive.

Netflix is available in Britain, but the selection is a little disappointing for me. I'm debating whether to continue with it after the free trial ends. I watch older stuff on Netflix and new stuff on pirate sites. With a VPN, I can also watch proper British TV which is brilliant!

I can't subscribe to this series. When I click the green "study" button, noting happens.

The first time I came across the word faucet I had to look it up in the dictionary!

Hehe, I didn't keep up with this thread. Actually I would like to point out that this guy with the yurt was quite sophisticated and well educated, and I wasn't mocking him at all. I suspect he made that statement ironically, and I genuinely did want to dash off to Kashgar with him and look at the Yurt!

It's a mathematical definition, not a cultural one. As far as I know, all countries use the same maths!

I hate that hairy meat! I find the Japanese bakeries in Shanghai make reasonable croissants, cakes etc but I think I've been spoilt growing up in Europe.....

Weirdly, when I was quite new in China something a bit like this happened to me (though nowhere near as extreme). I went to a picnic that was arranged online and two guys there asked me out. The first one who was Shanghainese led with "I have a really nice car, I can drive you anywhere you want" and the other guy from Taiwan showed me a load of drawings he had done which he happened to have in his backpack. I remember being puzzled at the time about why does the first guy keep telling me about his car, and nothing about himself? I found this a bit weird so I went with the second guy!

A few months later, in an even weirder variant, I met a guy from Xinjiang Province who told me "I have a yurt and two horses back home...."!
