May 9, 2009 at 12:26 AM谈到囧引起我联想“orz", 它是另外一个现代汉语词语 -- 据我所知它的意思是 “五体投地的崇拜你。” 它也可以算是 “emoticon," 因为它的形象是人在地上叩头 （o 是头， r 是手， z 是腿）。

May 1, 2009 at 11:43 AMIn Stephen Owen's 2006 book "The Late Tang: Chinese Poetry of the Mid-Ninth Century" there is a story about Jia Dao: "Every New Year's Day Jia Dao was said to spread out all the poems he had composed during the year, to which we would offer up a sacrifice of meat and wine to them as the things that had consumed his spirit in the course of the preceding year."
There is a nice translation of this poem in Burton Watson's "Columbia Book of Chinese Poetry." Also interesting is a translation of this poem in "The Jade Mountain" by Witter Bynner and Kiang Kang-Hu, published in 1920. This book's translations are a bit idiosyncratic, using very plain language, sometimes I like them, sometimes not.

October 11, 2009 at 4:55 AMI've been unable to access Chinesepod for the last two weeks from my home computer in Hong Kong. (It was OK from my work computer's network, which runs through a U.S. connection.) I think the server was too slow, so the connection was timing out. Glad to see it is back to normal today.
